Leake Academy girls improve to 25-1 as season winds down

The Leake Academy Rebelettes grabbed two more convincing wins last week in district play.

The Rebelettes improved to 25-1 on the year hammered opponents last week, beating Heritage 67-30 on Tuesday and then beat Lamar 70-23 on Friday.

The Rebels weren't as fortunate as they lost 68-23 to Heritage and 71-44 to Lamar.

Leake will play their final home game of the season Tuesday as they host Winston Academy for senior night. On Thursday, the Rebels will travel to East Rankin in a makeup game before going to Hillcrest Christian on Friday in the last game of the regular season. The district tournament will be played the following week starting Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Lamar School in Meridian. The North AAA Tournament will be at Magnolia Heights and the State AAA Tournament will be at Hillcrest Christian.

The Rebelettes stayed unbeaten in district play as they cruised to a 37-point win over the Lady Patriots on Tuesday.

Leake started quick as they jumped out to a 24-6 lead in the first period and outscored Heritage 18-10 in the second period to lead 42-16 at the half. Leake continued to extend its lead in the third period as they outscored Heritage 21-11 to lead 63-27 going to the fourth.

Miriam Prince led Leake with a game-high 26 points as she had five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Mabry Mayfield had 10 points, six rebounds four steals and three blocks. Morgan Freeny had seven points and four assists while Ashley Smith had seven points and three assists. Laura Katherine Claire and Savanna Greer each had four points while Emmi Harkins had six assists and Emeri Warren had five rebounds.

The Patriots flexed their muscles as they took a 45-point win over the Rebels on Tuesday.


Heritage led 17-8 at the end of the first and then outscored Leake 25-2 in the second to lead 42-10 at the half. Heritage continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Leake 15-7 in the third and 11-6 in the fourth.

Garrett Dunn, Whitt Welch and Ben Harrison each had five points apiece while Reed Young had four points.

Lamar 23

The Rebelettes jumped out to a 25-point lead in the first period and cruised to a 47-point win over the Lady Raiders on Friday.

Leake started quickly. They led 32-7 at the end of the first period and 46-14 at the half. Leake continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Lamar 13-6 in the third and 11-3 in the fourth.

Leake Academy made 12-of-25 three-point shots on the night and was 25-of-46 from the field. Emmi Harkins led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points and five assists. Ashley Smith had 13 points, four assists and three steals. Emeri Warren had 10 points and four rebounds while Morgan Freeny also had 10 points. McKinley Allen had eight points while Mabry Mayfield had six points and six rebounds.

The Raiders used a strong second half to pull away and beat the Rebels by 27 to split the season series.

Lamar led 8-0 early and 19-11 at the end of the half. Leake then outscored Lamar 16-10 in the second to cut the lead to 29-27. Leake then scored the first six points of the third period and took a 33-29 lead early in the third. But then the wheels fell off for the Rebels as Lamar scored eight straight to go up 37-33 and went on to outscore Leake 24-8 in the period for a 53-35 advantage going into the fourth. Lamar finished by outscoring Leake 14-9 in the fourth for the final margin.

Freshman Whitt Welch led Leake with 11 points while Ben Harrison and Hagan Pike each had seven points apiece. Hagan Davis also had six points.
