Leake Academy dominates Winston Academy 56-0
The Leake Academy Rebels kicked off the 2020 season with a 56-0 victory over Winston Academy Friday in prep football action.
The 1-0 Rebels will be back at home this Friday when they host Jackson Academy. The Raiders opened their season with a 49-14 victory over Pillow Academy.
Leake Academy put this game away in the first half. Quarterback Rhett Atkinson scored the first touchdown on a 24-yard run. Cole Arthur kicked the extra point and Leake Academy went up 7-0 with 10:09 left in the first quarter.
Leake Academy scored again a couple of minutes later when Atkinson hit Riley Myers on a 30-yard TD pass play. Arthur’s kick was good and Leake Academy led 14-0.
Leake Academy scored again later in the quarter when Whitt Welch scored on a one-yard run. Arthur’s kick was good and Leake Academy carried a 21-0 lead into the second quarter.
Atkinson went back to air in the second quarter, connecting with Thomas Cheatham on an 11-yard TD pass play. Arthur’s kick was good and the Rebels led 28-0 with 8:35 left in the second quarter.
Welch scored again on a 14-yard run with 5:20 left in the first half. Arthur’s kick was good and Leake Academy led 35-0.
Welch scored again, this time on a one-yard gain. Arthur’s kick was good and Leake Academy led 42-0 with 4:06 remaining in the half.
The final score of the first half came when Welch scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 35-yard run. Arthur kicked the extra point and Leake Academy led 49-0 at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Rebels scored their final points when Bryce Watkins scored on a 13-yard run. Arthur’s kick was good.
The Rebels had a 373-130 edge in total yards and had 20 first downs to Winston’s 7. Leake Academy rushed 39 times for 319 yards and completed 4-of-6 yards for 64 yards. Winston finished with 56 rushing yards on 19 rushes. The Patriots completed 11-of-20 passing attempts for 74 yards and one interception.
The Rebels had no turnovers and did not punt. Winston had three turnover – two fumbles and an interception.
Welch was the leading rusher with 163 yards on 14 carries. Watkins added 66 yards on 12 totes. Atkinson finished with 86 total yards. He had all of Leake’s passing yards and rushed six times for 32 yards.
Kade Marble led the Rebels with six tackles.
