Leake Academy basketball stays hot

The Leake Academy girls basketball team stayed unbeaten this past week, picking up three more wins.

The Rebelettes beat Kirk 45-20 on Monday, rival Pillow Academy 47-44 on Tuesday and Central Hinds 55-36 on Friday.

The Rebels only played two games and split a pair, beating Pillow 60-54 before losing 65-48 to Central Hinds.

Leake is scheduled to play in the North Delta Tournament this week as the Rebelettes play Class 6A public school Southaven on Monday at 5 p.m. and then play North Panola on Tuesday at noon. The Rebels will play Tunica Academy on Monday following the girls game.

Leake Academy will return from the Thanksgiving break and host Canton on Monday, Nov. 29, and will travel to Pillow on Thursday, Dec. 2, to round out the week.

The Rebelettes got off to a quick start and cruised to a 25-point win on Monday.

Leake Academy jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first and outscored the Lady Raiders 16-4 in the second to lead 33-8 at the half. Leake outscored Kirk 10-2 in the third to lead 43-10 after three, while Kirk took the fourth period 10-2 for the final margin.

Emeri Warren was the only Rebelette in double figures with 16 points and six rebounds. Miriam Prince had eight points, four assists and three steals, while Morgan Freeny had six points, four assists and four steals. Allen Kaye Wilcox and Grace Maxey each had five points apiece, while Katye Jones had eight rebounds.

Pillow 44

In a back-and-forth contest, the Lady Rebels pulled away in the fourth to take a three-point win over the Lady Mustangs on Tuesday.

Leake got off to a quick start and outscored Pillow 18-12 in the first. But Pillow outscored Leake 13-9 in the second and third periods and led 38-35 going to the fourth. Leake outscored Pillow 11-6 in the fourth for the final margin.

Leake had a poor shooting night and was 14-of-42 from the field and 3-of-19 from the 3-point line. Leake was 16-of-26 from the free-throw line. Miriam Prince led Leake with 25 points while Katye Jones had nine points and eight rebounds. Grace Maxey had six rebounds, while Emeri Warren had 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Rebels.

Playing their first game with the football players, the Rebels used strong finishes to each half to take a six-point win over the Mustangs.

Pillow led 16-13 at the end of the first before Leake took the second period 17-9 to lead 30-25 at the half. Pillow outscored Leake 15-12 in the third to cut the lead to 42-40 going into the fourth. But Leake outscored Pillow 18-14 to take the win.

Jake Freeny led the Rebels with 22 points, while Samuel Prince came off the bench in the second half and had 14 points. Seth Alford had eight points, Whitt Welch added seven, and Aiden Watkins chipped in five.

Central Hinds 36

The Rebelettes used a big second period and pulled away from the Lady Cougars to take a 19-point win on Thursday.

Each team scored 13 points in the first period, and Leake pulled away in the second, outscoring Central Hinds 14-3 to lead 27-16 at the half. Leake continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Central Hinds 15-11 in the third and 13-9 in the fourth.

Leake again struggled from the field, shooting 38 percent (18-of-47) overall and just 4-of-20 from the 3-point line. The Rebelettes had a good night at the free-throw line, going 15-of-17.

Morgan Freeny led Leake Academy with 17 points, while Katye Jones had 14 points and eight rebounds. Emeri Warren had 12 points and five rebounds, while Miriam Prince had nine points, seven assists, four steals and four rebounds.

The Rebels suffered their first loss of the season with a 17-point defeat by the Cougars.

Central Hinds led 20-15 at the end of the first period, and each team scored 11 in the second as the Cougars led 31-26 at the half. Central Hinds pulled away in the third period, outscoring Leake 22-8 to lead 53-34 going to the fourth. Leake outscored Central Hinds 14-12 in the fourth for the final margin.

Henry Dabbs led Leake with 15 points, while Jake Freeny had nine points. Sam Evans and Aiden Watkins each had six points apiece.
