Leake Academy baseball team swept by Simpson County Academy

It was a rough week for the Leake Academy baseball team.

The Rebels lost all three games, getting swept by Simpson County Academy, falling 11-4 on Tuesday, 9-8 on Thursday and 14-8 on Friday.

Leake, now 7-10, will return to action with a three-game series with Lamar School this week. Leake will play at Lamar on Monday and then host the Raiders on Tuesday. Leake will finish the series on Thursday at Lamar.

The Cougars scored in every inning and pulled away to take a six-run win over the Rebels on Friday and sweep the series.

Each team scored two in the first while Simpson led 5-4 after two innings. Each team scored one in the third while Simpson scored four in the fourth to take a 10-5 lead. Each team then scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth while Simpson finished with one in the seventh.

Simpson outhit Leake 10-9 and drew nine walks. Rope Lovern was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Gunter Scott was 2-for-3. Rhett Atkinson homered, scored twice and drove in two runs. Bishop Hardin also scored twice.

Atkinson started on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up eight runs on three hits and seven walks. John Cross Beckham pitched two innings and gave up three runs on five hits. Bryce Watkins pitched one inning and gave up two runs on one hit while Jack Harkins gave up one run on one hit.

The Rebels were unable to hold onto an early lead as the Cougars needed two extra innings to take a walk-off win on Thursday.

The Rebels exploded with seven runs in the third inning while Simpson scored one in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Each team scored one in the eighth while Simpson scored one in the ninth.

Simpson outhit Leake 14-9 in the contest. Aiden Watkins was 4-for-5 to lead Leake while Bishop Hardin doubled and drove in two runs. Rhett Atkinson and Rope Lovern also doubled for Leake. Bryce Watkins walked twice and scored two runs had had two RBIs.

Aiden Watkins started on the mound and pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks. Hardin pitched the other 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on six hits.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and held on to take a seven-run win over the Rebels on Tuesday.

Simpson scored three in the first and second and led 7-2 after three. Simpson added two in the fifth and seventh while Leake scored one in the fifth and seventh.

Leake outhit Simpson 14-7 in the contest. Gunter Scott was 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs while Rhett Atkinson was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Bishop Hardin and Kade Marble also doubled while Rope Lovern drew three walks.

Matthew Nowell started and pitched two innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two. Bryce Watkins pitched the last five innings and gave up four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two.
