Lady Yellowjackets split matchups on diamond

The Union softball team split a pair of games last week during spring break.

The Lady Yellowjackets took a tight 4-3 win over Choctaw Central and then lost 2-0 to West Harrison.

The Union baseball team only played one game and lost a 13-1 game to highly regarded Southeast Lauderdale.

The Lady Yellowjackets played twice last week and split a pair of hard-fought games.

Union took a tight 4-3 win over Choctaw Central on Thursday. Union built a 3-1 lead through four innings while Choctaw scored two in the sixth to make it close. Union had 11 hits in the contest, all singles. Maggie Atkinson was 2-for-3 and scored two runs while Abigail Cleveland, Landrey Hanna and Alanee Wheeler each had a two singles. Wheeler also pitched all seven innings and gave upthrew runs on four hits and seven walks while striking out nine.

On Friday, Union dropped a 2-0 contest to West Harrison. West scored one in the first and third. Union had six hits, led by Tiara Campbell who was 2-for-3. Abigail Cleveland doubled while Raleigh Dickerson and Landrey Hanna each singled. Aubrie Coleman started and pitched four innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Alanee Wheeler pitched the last two innings.

Union is scheduled to host Lake on Tuesday and then play at Northeast Lauderdale on Thursday. They will then host Enterprise on Friday and Morton on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets only got in one game last week and dropped a 13-1 five-inning game to Southeast Lauderdale.

Union scored one in the top of the first while Southeast scored six in the bottom of the first. The Tigers added three in the second and two in the third and fourth innings.

Union had three hits but committed six errors. Jackson Flake doubled while Jacob Freeman singled and drove in a run. Rafe Manning also had a single while Austin Lee scored the Yellowjackets only run.

Kooper Fultz started and pitched just one inning, giving up eight runs on four hits while Tanner Watkins pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits. J.T. Cook pitched 2/3 of an inning and Manning pitched the last inning.

The Yellowjackets will return to play this week as they play a two-game division series with J.Z. George. Game 1 will be Tuesday at Union while Game will be Friday at North Carrollton. The Yellowjackets will then play Saturday at home against Lake.
