Lady Yellowjackets in 2A state basketball semifinals

What a week for the Union Lady Yellowjackets basketball team.

In five days, the Lady Yellowjackets won three games in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 2A state tournament. They have advanced to the semi-finals where they were to play defending champion Calhoun City on Tuesday morning in the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. This is the first time since 1993 Union has made it to Jackson.

“Calhoun City is the defending champions,” said Coach Matt Wilbanks. “They press and one of their girls will be playing in the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game. She can really play.

“Calhoun City will be tough. But we have made it this far. I will take my team any day.”

Because of last month’s ice storm, the tournament dates were pushed back and teams had to play three games last week with the girls taking the court on Monday,  Wednesday and Friday.

Union started the week with a 46-43 win over Bogue Chitto and a 61-31 victory over Puckett. They then defeated West Lincoln 35-32 in the third round.

The winner of the Union-Calhoun City game advances to the championship game Friday at 1 p.m. with the winner between Region 6-A rival Newton High School and New Site joining them.

Union enters the week with a 28-6 record.
