The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors returned from the Christmas break with an 8-3 record and the No. 1 ranking in a state poll of Class 4A girls teams.

The Warrior teams split with Heritage Academy Monday night. The Choctaw Lady Warriors defeated Hartfield 71-64 while the Warriors dropped a 61-42 decision.

The Warrior teams were to host Kosciusko Tuesday night in a Region 4-4A game.

This been an unusual season for Coach Bill Smith and the Lady Warriors because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They weren’t able to practice during the summer and so far this season, they have had seven games cancelled. They have also had injuries and were quarantined for two weeks at one point.

“When we can keep everybody together, we are pretty good,” Smith said. “We like to play in shootouts and tournaments against the better teams to get us ready for the playoffs. But most of those have been cancelled. We will be playing mainly district games and any games we can pick up.”

The Lady Warriors’ losses have come against top teams, including Meridian, Brandon and Tishomingo County.

Carly Keats plays guard. Against Heritage, she led with 18 points. Meloney Thames and Shantashia John also play guard. Kyla Farmer plays the post and Lyleonia Johnson is the center.

The Warriors now stand at 3-7.

Octavious Jones plays point guard for the Warriors. Brayson Daniel is the second guard while Avontae Jones is the third guard. Thomas Tangle is the forward while Traiton Martin is the center. Speedy Lewis, Elias Bell, Caven Wilson and Billy Isom are also expected to see plenty of playing time.
