Lady Rockets pick up region win over Holmes

The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets picked up a 55-44 Region 3-5A victory at Holmes County Central last Tuesday.

The Lady Rockets entered the week with an 11-2 record. They were slated to host Canton High School Tuesday. Neshoba Central is scheduled to visit Pearl on Friday in a non-region game. The Neshoba girls are tentatively scheduled to play a makeup game at Cleveland Central on Saturday,

Neshoba Central led 22-12 at the end of the first quarter. They outscored Holmes 13-11 in the second quarter and led 34=23 at the half.

Holmes battled back in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Rockets 12-9. But in the final quarter, Neshoba Central had an 11-9 scoring edge and held on to take the victory,

Veronica Williams led the Lady Rockets with 16 points while Hama’ya Fielder scored 13 and Shaylynn Hunter scored 11.

“We shot the ball well and took the lead,” Coach Jason Broom said. “We played smart ball. They came out to defend against our shots and that opened the inside up some.”

The Neshoba Central boys dropped two games last week as they lost a 53-42 decision to Holmes County and 41-27 loss to Cleveland Central.

The Rockets were within striking distance against Holmes County after three quarters. But the Jaguars outpointed Neshoba Central 14-7 in the fourth quarter to hold on to the victory.

Elijah Ruffin led the Rockets with 1e points while Zac Goodin put in nine.

Cleveland went up 15-7 after the first quarter and held on in a low scoring game,

The Rockets dropped to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in the region.
