The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets are off to a 10-2 start and are currently ranked No. 3 in the state according to poll of Class 5A girls teams.

The Lady Rockets were to visit Holmes County Central on Tuesday. A game at Cleveland Central girls has been postponed. However, the Neshoba Central boys will play their game as scheduled.

“It’s been a good year,” Coach Jason Broom said. “We lost a couple of early games but since we have been playing some good basketball.

“We are headed into our district schedule. Hopefully, this will carry over.”

The Lady Rockets run a fast pace style offense.

Neshoba Central is in the same region with Holmes, Cleveland and Canton High School.

Shaylynn Hunter is the point guard while Shante’ Beaulieu plays the second guard and Hama’ya Fielder plays the third guard. Jeleisya Jim plays forward and Veronica Williams is the center.

The Neshoba Central boys stand at 7-7 under new head coach Russell Cruise, who joined the Neshoba Central coaching staff last summer after long-time coach Jerry Byrd retired.

Cruise has been coaching for 23 years and comes to the Rockets from Centreville Academy. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cruise wasn’t able to spend as much time with his new team during the summer as he normally would.

“We are a young team in some areas,” Cruise said. “But we have some talent. We are trying to put things together.”
