The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets picked up two victories last week and entered the week ranked No. 1 in Mississippi in a statewide poll for Class 5A girls basketball teams.

The Lady Rockets are also ranked No. 2 in a statewide poll for all-girls high school basketball teams. The Harrison Central Lady Red Rebels are ranked No. 1 in the rankings.

“It validates the notice and success the kids have had to this point,” Coach Jason Broom said. “We have had some good success against some good teams that were ranked highly at the beginning of the year. Summer wins don’t count, but we felt then that if we took care of our business, we should be one of the top teams.

“Ten games in, the way the kids are playing, I look at it as a well-earned accolade for what they have done. It doesn’t put any points on the scoreboard or win any games, but it is nice to be recognized.”

The Lady Rockets improved to 10-0 with a 76-35 win over New Hope and a 92-25 win over Newton County.

The Neshoba Central boys won their second game of the season as they knocked off Newton County 60-47. Earlier in the week, they lost an 82-48 decision to New Hope.

Neshoba Central has two games this week. They were to visit Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and Kosciusko on Friday night.
