The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets picked up a big victory on the road Friday as they advanced to girls state Class 5A quarterfinals.

After finishing second in the Region 3-5A tournament, the Lady Rockets came on to take wins over Center Hill, 75-39, last Monday and New Hope, 45-35, last Friday.

Neshoba Central faces a familiar opponent in Vicksburg Saturday night in the quarterfinals. The Lady Rockets and the Missy Gators played in the same region for several years and met last year in the state playoffs. The game tips off at 5:30 p.m. and will be played at Itawamba Community College in Fulton.

"We are not surprised to be in this position," Coach Jerry Byrd said. "We have put a lot of work into this season. We have had a lot of productive practices and it has paid off. We have worked to get better every day.

"We played a challenging schedule in the first half of the season, and then we played in a tough region. We were ready for the playoffs."

The Lady Rockets took a big lead in the first half against Center Hill. Leading 22-7 after the first quarter, the Lady Rockets outscored Center Hill 19-9 in the second quarter and went up 41-16 at the half. Hama'ya Fielder led the Lady Rockets with 20 points while Jeleisya Jim and Shay Hunter both put in 16 points.

The second quarter proved to be the different for the Lady Rockets in their game at New Hope.

Neshoba Central trailed 11-10 after the first quarter. The Lady Rockets then outpointed New Hope 16-6 in the second quarter and led 26-17 at the half. The Lady Rockets outscored New Hope 7-6 in the third quarter and both teams scored 12 points in the final stanza.

Fielder led with 24 points.
