A Halloween Trunk-or-Treat was held for the residents and staff of the State of Mississippi Veterans' Home of Kosciusko on October 31 at the facility. It was an enjoyable activity for everyone involved.

Quality Hospice Care, Inc. of Philadelphia was honored to have been a part of this event which helped thank the veterans who contributed to our country's freedom and the wonderful staff who provide such good care for them. These special holiday celebrations mean so much to these residents. They give them something to anticipate and enjoy apart from their everyday lives.

Everyone seemed to have a great time and appreciated the goody bags donated by Quality Hospice Care. The snack cakes for the veterans donated by Henry Butler certainly brought smiles to the veterans' faces.  What a great act of kindness! Thank you, Rex and JoAnn Tinsley Rounsaville.

Two dedicated Ole Miss students drove for two-and-a-half hours to vote in their first Presidential Election! Burgin McClellan and Stephen Lombard drove from Oxford to Philadelphia early on Tuesday to cast their ballots in person for the next President of the United States! It was a very special first which these young adults took seriously, even though they had to drive back the same day!

October was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month which prompted activities, dissemination of information, and education to promote women's consciousness of this dreadful disease which has caused so much heartache and suffering for those who are affected by it, not only the individual, but also their families. It is a very insidious disease which eludes a cure after many decades of intense research.

Many treatments have been discovered that were not available when my sister, Gerry, fought breast cancer She lost her battle at age 52, but left behind a legacy for others.

Gerry's coworkers wanted to help by donating some of their own sick leave days to her so she could stay home on days when she was too ill to come in to work The idea became a cause which was taken up by Senator Manual Lujan who .represented New Mexico in Washington, D.C. With her permission, he told her story on the floor of the U.S. Senate. He presented a bill to make it legal for those who chose to donate leave to their coworkers to do so. It has been a legacy that has endured long after her death and versions were adopted by private industry for their employees. Although Gerry knew it was too late for her, she hoped it might help others. Ironically, the bill passed in the Senate on the day she died.

It has been many years ago, but I still remember what a happy warrior she was until the very last morning of her life.  She lived the three years she was given with so much joy and courage and with all of her being I still miss her so.

She was determined to complete the last 8 miles of her challenge for those who are fighting cancer, her mother who is an 18 year cancer survivor, and her friend and funning buddy, Casey Mars, who ran her last race last November. Shannon wore a pink bandanna head band in Casey's memory. Thank you, Shannon, for your faithfulness and determination.
