Neshoba Central’s Jarquez Hunter has signed to play college football for the Auburn Tigers.

Hunter announced his decision Friday morning at the school in front of classmates and well-wishers.

Hunter started four years at Neshoba Central and helped lead the Rockets to the North State Class 5A finals in 2019, He was named Mississippi’s Mr. Football for Class 5A teams in 2020 and played in the Mississippi-Alabama All-star Game.

As a senior at Neshoba Central, Hunter rushed for 1,687 yards and 22 touchdowns in just eight games, averaging 210.9 yards per game and 7.5 yards per carry while being named the state’s Class 5A Mr. Football. It brought his high school career totals to 5,834 rushing yards — with all but 73 coming after his freshman year — and 78 rushing touchdowns. He averaged 157.7 yards per game and 8.6 yards per carry for his prep career and scored 93 total touchdowns.

The addition of Hunter boosts Auburn’s 2021 class to No. 27 in the nation — up three spots from No. 30 after National Signing Day — in the 247Sports Composite team rankings. More importantly, though, his signing addresses a major need for the Tigers in the backfield, giving the program a fourth scholarship running back for the 2021 season.
