October 9, 1942

Vaccination against diphtheria, small pox and typhoid fever will be made available without charge to the people of Neshoba County in a preventive disease control program beginning this week and sponsored by the State Board of Health in cooperation with the County Board of Supervisors.

To adjust the Neshoba County School program to meet the needs of the war emergency, a county-wide conference of school teachers, superintendents, and trustees was held this afternoon in Philadelphia High School Auditorium with H.M. Coen, assistant State Superintendent of Education.      

October 4, 1952

The biggest meeting of cancer workers ever held in Mississippi and one of the biggest meetings in the entire South, will take place in two weeks in Jackson at Hotel Heidelberg. This convention marks the third biennial meeting of the Mississippi Division of the American Cancer Society, according to Mrs. Elizabeth Wates, executive vice-chairman of the state organization.     

         

October 4, 1962

Bids are being asked on repair of Highway 15, between Philadelphia and Noxapater by the State Highway Commission, it was announced this week. The improvements will include grading, drainage, bridge, base, double bituminous surface treatment and asphalt pavement 1-429 miles in Neshoba and Winston counties.      

October 5, 1972

The United States Senate has approved and sent to the House of Representatives a bill that would authorize construction of the 16,000-acre Edinburg Reservoir in Neshoba County. The Senate acted quickly on the Omnibus River and Harbors Bill which only days before had cleared the Senate Public Works Committee and the Office of Management and Budget.      

October 7, 1982

Dr. Danny Cheatham, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Cheatham of the Burnside Community, has been named to a new position as associate director of the Montana Cooperative Extension Service. This post is comparable to one he held the last two years in Mississippi. Cheatham assumed duties in August and it was announced by Dr. Carl Hoffman, vice president for Extension at Montana State University.          

      

October 2, 1992 

The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has been awarded a grant from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The announcement of the $200,000 grant for social and economic development programs was made by U.S. Senators Trent Lott and Thad Cochran of Mississippi.

The late Attorney Herman W. Alford was remembered Friday at the dedication of a highway bearing his name as a person who advanced the quality of life in the community because of his many years of work in industrial development and education.       

    

October 2, 2002

New communications gear visible atop the downtown water tower is a new $13,000 stream of revenue for the city utility. A new relationship forged between a cellular telephone company and Philadelphia Utilities is profitable for citizens. The utility recently signed a contract with Voice Stream, formerly known as Powertel, to place a cellular communications tower on the water tank downtown.   

   

October 5, 2012

A tribute to Blues artist Otis Rush will be among events planned Saturday during the annual Octoberfest in downtown Philadelphia. Octoberfest will kick off Saturday morning in DeWeese Park with arts and crafts vendors, kid’s games, and activities, including jumpers, face painting, cotton candy, a cake walk and a day of family musical entertainment performed in cooperation with the Philadelphia-Neshoba Music Association.
