August 21, 1942

A Lions Club was organized in Philadelphia at the Sanders Hotel with Jack Anderson, principal of the Choctaw Indian Agency Schools, elected as President of the 1942-43 fiscal year. Seventeen charter members attended. Other officers are; A.B. McCraw, 1st Vice-President; Marvin Henley, 3rd Vice-President; W.T. Blackwell, Secretary.   

August 23, 1952

Willard Hayes of Philadelphia has been named Chairman for Neshoba County’s Defense Bonds Committee and has a number of others from over the county serving with him. Plans are being laid by the committee for the first drive which officially opens on Labor Day.   

         

August 23, 1962

The recent Neshoba County Fair had a couple of national personalities as visitors in Bill Wynn, the manager of the Midsouth Fair at Memphis and Mrs. Mills, secretary of the National Fair Association. They were here on Tuesday and Wednesday and were no less amazed than many others who were seeing our giant house party for the first time. 

August 24, 1972

Five Philadelphia pre-college students were among 215 participating in the Pre-College Conference at the University of Mississippi held during the past week. They were; Frank R. Barnett, Sherry Lynn Gray, Marvin Al Posey, Jerry Franklin McCauley, and Robert Theodore Pigott Jr. The Ole Miss Pre-College Conference program was designed to give students a preview of life at Ole Miss and to facilitate the transition of high school and junior college students to life at the University.   

August 21, 1982

The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating the weekend break-in of Byars Furniture Co. on Byrd Avenue. Police Chief, Jack Teer said the department was checking possible lead but had nothing definite to report at present. The burglars entered by knocking out a wall on the Walnut Street side of the store.           

      

August 21, 1992 

Neshoba Central, Philadelphia, and Choctaw Central schools were award 1991 mini-grants by the Neshoba Education Foundation. Grants were made available through Allies for Education, a program of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Chamber Commerce.     

    

August 21, 2002

Doctor Van Helsing will be hot on the path of the Count this fall when Philadelphia theater enthusiasts perform a dramatization of Bram Stoker’s masterpiece novel, “Dracula”. Stacy Pair will direct the play.  

   

August 24, 2012

A second attempt for the city to be designated a qualified resort area was approved by the Philadelphia Mayor and Board of Alderman after they passed a resolution asking that it be introduced in the state Legislature.
