August 14, 1942

Captain Ernest W. Permenter, serving with the United States Army somewhere in Australia, cabled his mother, Mrs. Madie Permenter of Philadelphia, that he was well and was working hard. Captain Permenter was recently promoted from the rank of Lieutenant and was stationed at Camp Wallace, Texas, before his transfer to Australia.  

August 13, 1952

Miss Thurla K. Tatum Will receive a Master of Arts Degree from Mississippi Southern College, Hattiesburg. Some few years ago she received a Bachelor of Science Degree from this institution. Miss Tatum has taught in Neshoba County, and in Philadelphia City School. At the present she is a member of the Sebastopol vocational High School Faculty.   

         

August 9, 1962

Miss Marlynn Ward, Miss Philadelphia of 1962, is to compete in the Miss Mississippi Contest in Vicksburg. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Ward of the Bloomo Community. Accompanying Miss Ward to Vicksburg were Mr. and Mrs. Varney Nowell and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Mclean, members of the local Jaycees and Jacettes, which sponsored the contests. 

August 10, 1972

Gov. Bill Waller is welcomed as the first Mississippi governor to visit the Choctaw Indian Nation. During the Choctaw Indian Fair, he is greeted by Phillip Martin, Tribal Chairman; Laurine York, 1972 Indian Princess, the visiting Seminole Indian Princess, and Frank Steve, Indian Fair Chairman. The governor spoke at the opening ceremonies of the Choctaw Indian Fair.  

August 12, 1982

Janet Lee Mowdy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mowdy, was crowned Miss Neshoba County at the Neshoba County Fair. She was also selected Miss Photogenic. For First Alternate, Tracy Ann Donald, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Donald, and Second Alternate, Apryl Lee, daughter of Jeannie Fowler and Charles Lea. Sally Learmonth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Learmonth, was selected Miss Congeniality.           

      

August 12, 1992 

Hal Hall, minister of music and youth at the Jumpertown United Methodist church, will sing gospel music. Elvis style, at an ice cream social Saturday at High Hill Baptist Church. On Sunday, he will present a sacred concert in the worship service. The Rev. Paul Leber is pastor.   

    

August 14, 2002

Chelsee Regon Ferris, four year old daughter of Josh and Amy “Ferris, recently completed in the America’s Cover Miss State Beauty Pageant. Chelsee captured the beauty title, she also won swimwear and casual wear competition. She placed first in former wear also. Chelsee also competed in the Little Miss Mississippi State Beauty Pageant where she took first place.

Norma Chae’ Isaac, 18, was presented the 2009 Mississippi Senate Resolution #33 by Sen. Giles Ward at Choctaw Central High School’ recent 2012 Academic Banquet.  Resolution #33 recognizes Isaac for being selected as a distinguished finalist of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award as well as the Presidents Call to Service Award for efforts in raising awareness and money for autism-based charities, inspired by her brother Nicholas, who is autistic. She received a total of 9 awards throughout the night.
