May 9, 1942
“A quota of $31,900 worth of War Bonds and Stamps has been set as the absolute minimum to be bought in Neshoba County in May with more every month from June on if America is to win the war.” This statement was made today by F. L. Grubbs, County War Savings chairman immediately after being notified by Secretary of Treasury Morgenthau of establishment of quotas for the nation.

City school officials have announced that the Philadelphia high school commencement exercises will be held Monday, May 26thg at the high school auditorium. Vesper services are slated for May 23rd with the baccalaureate services set for May 25th, both at the high school auditorium. Rev. J. L. Neill, pastor of the Methodist church will deliver the baccalaureate address, it was announced.

The East Central Feeder Pig Association held a pig sale at the Neshoba County Fairgrounds last Thursday, selling 262 head. The pigs sold averaged $13.18 per hundred pounds and brought $25.80 per hindered pounds. The average weight of the pigs sold was 51.5 pounds.
May 7, 1972
The Neshoba County sheriff’s department made 15 raids in April which resulted in nine charges of possession of beer and whiskey. This was reported in the monthly report of Sheriff Melton Bounds. A total of 85 arrests were made during the month. Several individuals were charged with possession of alcoholic beverages. There were 85 arrests for possession of whiskey.

The fund drive to buy the “Jaws of Life” rescue device was off to a good start, passing the $2,000 mark Wednesday. The goal is $7,500. Assistant Chief John F. Lewis of the Philadelphia Fire Department said the drive had gotten off to a good start and people were contributing well. “Jaws of Life” is a hydraulic device that helps rescue those who are trapped in traffic and other accidents.

The annual Neshoba County Classic Walking and Racing Horse Show will get underway Saturday June 6 at Gaston Barrett Field. The fields on Highway 19 south, inside the city limits. Sponsored by the Philadelphia – Neshoba County Chamber of Commerce, the event will begin at 6 p. m. and will feature 30 classics. Judge will be Buddy Moore. Other officials include Billy Walton, announcer; Barbara Swearingen, organist; Dr. D. G. May, veterinarian; Mitch Hearn, farrier; and Johnny Phillips, ringmaster.

Although a Jackson attorney’s book about his Neshoba County ancestry is four years old, he still fields calls about the work, for which he won a national award. An after effect of the work’s completion has been an increased awareness by Wendell H. Cook, Jr., of the importance of family history. Cook’s work, “Passage to the Present: The Story of a Southern Family,” was 25 years in the making and not only elaborates on his own family history, but covers various historic aspects of Neshoba County as well.

A new principal will take the helm at Neshoba Central High School on July 1st. John Bowen, Neshoba’s current middle school principal, was appointed to the post by the School Board at its April meeting. He will succeed Joey Blount, who will teach seventh grade math during the 2012-13 school year.
