FEBRUARY 27, 1942

Such tremendous blows have been dealt to Japans navy and merchant marine that if the date of destruction continues for one year, her eventual doom will be sealed, United States naval officials indicated Wednesday night.

To take care of its enlarged program, the Neshoba County Rationing Board has set up a new office, located in the lobby of the Philadelphia Electric System, with Miss Colette Cockrell as a full time secretary.  

FEBRUARY 28, 1952

Lamar Salter this week tendered his resignation as superintendent of Bond High School to accept the position as business manager of the Neshoba County Hospital. Mr. Salter was named by the board of trustees of the hospital to succeed C. W. Banks who recently resigned to serves as business manager of an insurance company in Birmingham Alabama. 

As a result of the recent study “The Family, A Christian’s Concern,” the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, hopes to encourage its membership: Daily private and family devotions, make a worship center in the home, at least keep the Bible in a conscious place in the home.  

FEBRUARY 27, 1962

There will be a Pre-Lenten supper and Bingo at Tucker Hall Monday night, March 5th, given by Holy Cross-Holy Rosary Churches, starting at 6 p.m. Supper will be served with Bingo following. Plates will be $1.00 for adults and 50 cents for children. 

Area Forester James E. Allen of Neshoba County reminded the public today that many damaging forest fires are caused annually by the careless burning of agricultural and other debris. 

  

FEBRUARY 26, 1972

The annual meeting of the stockholders of the United Givers Fund of Neshoba County will be held Tuesday, March 7, at 3:30 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce office. New officers and directors will be elected.    

FEBRUARY 27, 1982

The Nicolo Marionette Company will present ‘Peter Pan’ at the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Library on Tuesday, March 2nd, at 3:30 p.m. Children wishing to attend may pick up their free tickets at the library before the performance to assure their admittance as space is limited. 

Farmers and others who have problems with beaver damage are invited to attend a meeting on beaver control in Philadelphia on March 10.   

      

FEBRUARY 26, 1992

Philadelphia’s National Bank of Commerce of Mississippi will host a reception Thursday, Feb. 27, honoring R. D. “Dwight” Mulholland and Mrs. Martha Hooper for their service to the Philadelphia community through their positions on Bank of Philadelphia’s board of directors and NBC’s advisory board. 

Beginning March 1, Don Tullos will take over as Neshoba County’s Emergency Management director. Tullos, EMS deputy director since 1988, was hired unanimously by the Neshoba County Board of Supervisors from a field of 15 applicants.   

    

FEBRUARY 28, 2002

A Jackson-based company wants to meet with local officials, perhaps as early as March, to discuss a possible reservoir. The company met recently with the county’s water cooperative and presented them with a rough drawing of a potential reservoir site. 

 Garrett Clark, a fourth grader at Neshoba Central Elementary School, likes being able to play basketball and learn more about the Lord. The last few weeks he has participated in a weekend children’s basketball league that is faith based outreach ministry of a church here.   

 

FEBRUARY 28, 2011

After numerous reviews by state and federal officials over more than three years, the Philadelphia Mayor and Board of Alderman were given the go-ahead last week to repave a section of Pecan Avenue. 

A new package store that opened Saturday across the line in Winston County is the talk (and toast) of the town since it’s cut liquor runs in half – or more – for some. Mississippi’s Liquor and Wine opened in Noxapater, about 17 miles North of Philadelphia.
