FEBRUARY 6, 1942

A call for volunteer help in keeping fires out of woodlands was made by W. L. Shaddix of Louisville, who talked to the Exchange Club here Wednesday noon, later meeting with the County Defense Council. 

The Neshoba County Association Training Union Rally will be held at the First Baptist Church, Philadelphia on Monday, February 9. The message, “The Christian’s Possibilities for Growth,” will be brought by the Rev. Charles Hamlet, of Decatur, Miss.     

FEBRUARY 7, 1952

The regular monthly meeting of the Neshoba County Farm Bureau was held Monday night, in the Courthouse with approximately 30 present. The meeting was called to order by President Marvin Savell, who called on Paul Vance to lead the group in prayer.    

The second weekly Jumbo Dollar Days drawing was held Wednesday afternoon at the courthouse when a large crown gathered to participate in the interesting and exciting game of “Jumbo.”   

FEBRUARY 6, 1962

Six Community Development clubs will compete for cash prizes at the annual Community Round-Up to be held Thursday evening, March 1st, at 7 o’ clock at the VFW Home, Highway 16 East.

The Woman’s Club of Philadelphia extends an invitation to public to view an exhibit of paintings by artist of Jackson, Sunday afternoon at the Log Cabin on the Philadelphia High School grounds. The club will hold an open house immediately following the band concert.     

  

FEBRUARY 5, 1972

A native of Philadelphia has been named assistant football coach at the University of Mississippi, head coach Billy Kinard announced Wednesday. He is Taylor McNeal, who will serve as defensive backfield coach, replacing John Hovious, who was named head freshman coach by Kinard. 

One hundred and eight students were recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, national honor society, at Mississippi State University during fall initiation ceremonies. New members included seven doctoral candidates, 13 masters’ students, and 88 undergraduates.    

FEBRUARY 6 1982

City officials Tuesday night commended football star Marcus Dupree for his high school record, his character and for being a credit to Philadelphia. Dupree is the most sought after high school football player in the nation.

Plans for Sunday’s Marcus Dupree Appreciation Day were finalized Monday night when the event’s steering committee meet in Westside Community Center. The program will begin at 4 p. m. on Sunday with Mrs. Glenda Faye Greer as mistress of ceremonies.   

      

FEBRUARY 5, 1992

The Neshoba County Democratic Executive Committee will meet Monday at 7 p. m. in the kitchen of the Neshoba County courthouse. The committee will make plans for holding the March 10 “Super Tuesday” primary election. 

A center will soon be in operation in Philadelphia to counsel young girls and women in crisis pregnancy situations. The Neshoba-Leake Crisis Pregnancy Center is a project of the newly formed Neshoba County Chapter of the Mississippi Right to life Organization.

Transportation officials hope two projects will four-lane Mississippi 16 west into Williamsville will be under contract before early 2003, including a 2.5-mile stretch from Williamsville to the Choctaw Indian Reservation.
