JANUARY 23, 1942

Destroying four dry kilns and approximately 200,000 feet of high grade lumber, flames swept the Henderson-Molpus Lumber Company yard Tuesday morning causing losses estimated at $20,000 by H. B. Turner, manager.    

JANUARY 24, 1952

One of the most enjoyable socials of the Business and Professional club was given by hostesses Mary Barnett, Elizabeth Rush and Esther Kerr Tuesday evening at the Benwalt Hotel, the event being a scavenger hunt.

A large attendance is expected at the First Methodist church Sunday morning, January 27th, to hear Dr. L. G. Jacobs of the Indiana Conference. Dr. Jacobs is head of the United Evangelistic Mission which is being planned by the church. 

JANUARY 25, 1962

Melvin Tullos has been named representative of District Five of Neshoba County on the Board of Trustees of East Central Junior College at Decatur. Mr. Tullos’ appointment was made by the Neshoba County board of Supervisors in December, and is for a term of five years.    

  

JANUARY 27, 1972

Westside Community Center was “buzzing with activity” Sunday as every Headstart child in Neshoba County received a physical checkup. During the day, 175 children and 156 parents were attended to by teachers, staff members and a team of physicians and nurses from Meridian and Jackson. 

M. M. (Bud) Kennedy has been named manager of the Neshoba County office of the state Employment Security Commission. He replaces Bennie Harris who was promoted to field representative at Clarksdale. Harris managed the office here four and a half years.   

JANUARY 28, 1982

The apparent robbery of a local couple’s mobile home immediately prior to a fire that destroyed the structure Friday, Jan 15, is under investigation by the Neshoba County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshall’s Office. 

      

JANUARY 29, 1992

The Tribal Council of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has been considering a feasibility study for storing nuclear waste. The nuclear material apparently would be stored on a 466-acre site in Noxubee County that was given to the tribe about two years ago by a company that had hoped to manage a non-nuclear hazardous waste facility.    

    

JANUARY 30, 2002

A prominent woman with a gifted ear for music who helped the Choctaw Indians preserve a part of their culture was remembered in a hymn sung by three Choctaw Women during a graveside service on Monday.   

 

JANUARY 31, 2011

There was no formal arrival plans for the National Guard’s 298th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion expected by week’s end after a year in Afghanistan because they will all be flying home separately from Fort Hood, military officials and families said.
