JANUARY 3, 1942

Billy Fulton, All-State center from Blond; Clinton Kelly, Laurel Hill, and Wilburn Waddell, Linwood, Neshoba County High School stars from last year, are announced as probable starters when the east Central Warriors engage Ellisville, last year’s State champions, in Decatur. The two teams will play gain this weekend. 

News comes that Wilbur Winstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Winstead of the House Community, has transferred from San Diego, California to Lakehurst, N.J., where he is training as a parachute trooper.  

JANUARY 3, 1952

A.J. McCraw has been named Attorney Referee for the Mississippi Workmen’s Compensation Commission and assumed his duties Wednesday. Headquarters will be in the state office in Jackson and the work will carry Mr. McCraw into various sections of the state on the hearings. Mr. McCraw is retiring as District Attorney for the 8th Judicial District after serving for eight years.   

JANUARY 4, 1962

Area Medical Officer, Dr. William A. Pettit, is being promoted to Surgeon first of the year. This grade in Public Health Service is equivalent to that of Major in the Army. Dr. Pettit, who administrates the Philadelphia High Service Unit, comprising hospital, field health nursing and sanitation facilities. Dr. Pettit is the son of Dr. Tanley C. Pettit, Cleveland, Tennessee, and Mrs. Mary Dunkin, Riverside, California.   

JANUARY 6, 1972

Barney Lillis of Fair Ground Road holds some apples that are from one of his apple trees. Lillis said that this was the only time he ever saw apples at this time of year. In addition to the fruit trees blooming at George Posey’s store at House. This is unreasonably warm weather which will end next week with a cold wave.  

JANUARY 7, 1982

Robert Bowton of Brookhaven, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bowton of Philadelphia, has qualified to run in the Boston Marathon in April of 1982. Bowton, 41, completed the 26.2 mile sixth annual Mississippi Marathon in three hours, eight minutes, to qualify in his age group for the international event.      

JANUARY 1, 1992

Leesa Lee, a music instructor at East Central Community College in Decatur, plays a new grand piano recently purchased for the fine Arts Center Auditorium. The new addition was made possible by a gift from the Newton County Community Concert Association. Admiring the sounds of the grand piano is Association representative Kenneth Jones of Decatur.  

JANUARY 2, 2002

This is the second year the H.O. Sargent Award has been awarded to a FFA member at Neshoba Central. This award is presented to a FFA member who is much diversified in their school activities. To receive this award they must be very active in other school activities and still devote time and effort needed to make the FFA chapter successful. Hope Chunn was the recipient of this award and she is the daughter of Robert and Jennifer Posey, both of Neshoba County.        

DECEMBER 28, 2011

Walton Stinson shot his first deer in December while hunting with his friends. Stinson shot a 6-point which weighed around 160 pounds. Walton is the son of Mike and Leah Stinson.
