OCTOBER 10, 1941

The Philadelphia Tornadoes play the strong team of Clarksdale Friday night, October 10th on the Clarksdale gridiron. The Clarksdale team is reputed to be one of the strongest teams in the Big Eight Conference. 

Everything can happen at a Dodgers game and did, even Eddie Bettan’s wanting to pinch-hit for Herman Franks in the final game with the Phillies which the Dodgers, who are fondly called “Them Bums” even outside the borough of Brooklyn, won 5-1. 

OCTOBER 5, 1951

The Philadelphia Exchange Club met Wednesday at the Benwalt Hotel. At this meeting the club voted to send State President Felton Grubbs as delegate to the National Convention in Miami, this week.       

This year, there are six boys from Philadelphia who are on East Central Junior College football squad. These boys were all outstanding players while at Philadelphia. These boys are Steve Webb, Sam Thomas, Dorman Pope, Billy Cole, A.J. Kilpatrick, and Joe Tolbert. 

OCTOBER 5, 1961

Miss. Patsy Sheppard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Sheppard of the Madden-Dixon community, was named Neshoba County Farm Bureau Queen at the annual meeting last Thursday night at the VFW home here. Selected to reign with Queen Patsy was King Truett Hobby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hobby of the Arlington community.  

    

OCTOBER 7, 1971

Neshoba Central’s wingback James Latimer picks up 15 yards on a key play in Friday night’s homecoming game against West Lauderdale. The Rockets won 18-7 Latimer picked up 74 yards in eight carries. 

Miss Debra Diane Goldman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Goldman of Carpentersville, Ill., former residents of Winston County, is the first entrant in the 1972 Miss Teenage Aurora Pageant from the Elgin, Ill., area. Debra moved with her family to Carpentersville last June.  

OCTOBER 8, 1981

Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council members Greg Nowell and Jim McCoy dig the pits to be used in barbecuing the pigs for the thirds annual Oktoberfest set for Saturday at Burnside Lake Park. 

Pam Johnson of Standing Pine community will be crowned 1981 homecoming queen at halftime of the Choctaw Central and Thomastown game. Members of her court are Dora Mingo of Pearl River, freshman maid; Melinda Sam of Red Water, junior maid; Anita Jim of Pearl River senior maid and Amanda Williams of Pearl River sophomore maid.    

OCTOBER 2, 1991

Mrs. Herman Alford expressed the appreciation of her family for the tributes to her late husband and for the naming of the Herman W. Alford Memorial Highway. 

Philadelphia Elementary School participated in the Binney and Smith Crayola Dream Makers Art Contest. The theme of the contest was imagination. 14 winners were selected for the school to participate in the Southeastern division.    

OCTOBER 3, 2001

Kristy Mayo recently received the Star Greenhand Award at the Neshoba Central FFA banquet from Rusty Smith, advisor. 

The United Way of Neshoba County kicked off its 2002 fund-raising campaign Tuesday morning at a breakfast in the Neshoba County Coliseum with a goal of $75,000. United Way dollars fund 16 area agencies.      

 

OCTOBER 5, 2011

A Neshoba County man told authorities he wrecked his pickup truck two years ago but could not remember where. The pickup was pulled from a canal on Lakeside Drive on Thursday after being spotted by a fisherman, police said. 

Christina Boswell, sifts through a pile of donated jeans during the annual “sale” at the Neshoba County Public Library last Thursday to benefit Relay for Life. Items donated ranged from toys and books to sweaters and shoes. Library Director Madonna May said they raised $4,949.65 during the sale.
