SEPTEMBER 19, 1941

G.R. Richardson, Arlington, was elected chairman of the Neshoba County Teachers’ Association at its first meeting held Thursday night, September 11, at the Philadelphia High School. Other new officers are L.C. Crowe, County Line, and Miss Katie Johnson, Arlington, secretary.      

SEPTEMBER 13, 1951

He’s not comin’ round the mountain, but he’s coming ‘round the strong defense of the Brandon team. Little Jerry Lott, making one of two touchdowns he made against Brandon on a thirty-five yard run. Jerry is one of the fastest runners Philadelphia has seen in a long, long time.    

SEPTEMBER 14, 1961

H.B. Hutchinson gives the key to his repair shop to Andy Griffin last week. Mr. Hutchinson, who opened his shop here in 1905, says a much younger and active man, in the person of Mr. Griffin, will carry on the work in the small appliance repair shop. 

Tommye Lynn Burns, hold a 5 ½ pound sweet potato grown by her grandmother, Mrs. S.A. Burns, in her garden on Gum Street. Tommye Lynn and her two friends, Charlotte Anderson and Martha Sharp, brought the large potato by The Democrat office to show the gardening ability of the grandmother.  

    

SEPTEMBER 16, 1971

Mrs. Vertise Boseman administrators first aid to Mike Clark in a demonstration of the new ambulance purchased by Neshoba County General Hospital, as Tom Tucker prepares to roll out the stretcher.  

SEPTEMBER 17, 1981

Ellen Kilgore and Leah Cole of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council, talk with Susan Evans, director of social services at the Neshoba County Nursing Home, about the Council’s upcoming events for which free passes will be provided for all Nursing Home residents. Mrs. Kilgore editor of the Council’s quarterly publication, the Tatler, and Miss Cole is the recording secretary for the Arts Council.  

SEPTEMBER 11, 1991

State Auditor Pete Johnson presents the “Certificate Recognizing Achievement in Financial Reporting” to the Philadelphia Public School District. Accepting the award is Vivian Hardy, finance officer, and Sandra Martin, business manager, and Dr. Therrell Myers, superintendent of the Philadelphia Public School District.   

SEPTEMBER 12, 2001

 Brenda Nowell’s senior Government-Economics class at Philadelphia High School sat quietly Tuesday morning, watching the results of the terrorism in New York City. A member of Nowell’s class, Dustin Turner, had a particular interest: his older sister, Mali, goes to school near the Empire State Building. 

Jimmy Gray of the Sandtown community spent Saturday giving wagon rides as a part of Autumnfest, a downtown arts and crafts show designed to raise money for the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council. While final tallies weren’t calculated, Autumnfest chairman Sherry Hazelwood said the turnout was good.    

 

SEPTEMBER 14, 2011

True to his promise, Coach Caleb Thompson shaved his head at a recent Neshoba Central pep rally. He promised his Algebra 1 students if they had a greater than 85 percent pass rate that he would shave his head. His students actually had a 90 percent pass rate on the Algebra 1 state test. Chief Keith Paige happily accepts the duty of shaving Coach Thompson’s head.
