AUGUST 15, 1941

Madison (Matt) Tinsley, of Philadelphia, who was inducted into the Army in April, has already received his first stripes. Stationed in Battery C of the Third Battalion at the Field ArFort Bragg, N.C. He is now Corporal Tinsley.  

AUGUST 9, 1951

Mrs. Grady Shumaker has been named secretary for the Philadelphia City Schools, taking the place of Mrs. J.A. Nowell, who, with her husband went to Woofville, where Mr. Nowell is superintendent of the school there. Mrs. Shumaker is the former Corrinne Moore.  

AUGUST 10, 1961

James Ernest Hurdle Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Hurdle Sr., of Philadelphia, has enlisted in the ARmy Security Agency at the Meridian Recruiting Office. He was counseled prior to enlistment by his army recruiters, Sfc. Charles Addis and Sgt. Langue Butler. Jim is presently taking army basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and upon completion of training he will specialize in one of the many technical skills of the Army Security Agency.    

    

AUGUST 12, 1971

Leigh Barrett of Atlanta, Georgia, presents the trophy his Junior Achievement Company received to Ron Young, executive of American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The trophy was awarded for outstanding sales in competition with 75 other Atlanta Junior Achievement Companies. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Majure of Philadelphia. 

AUGUST 13, 1981

The five finalists in the Miss Neshoba County Pageant were; Teresa Leopard, Jo Jo Thrash, Rita Breazeale, Tammy Williamson, and Tammy Bates. Rita Breazeale was crowned the new 1981 Miss Neshoba County, and she was crowned by the 1980 Miss Neshoba County, Melody Smith. 

AUGUST 7, 1991

Floyd Jones grew this 2 pound tomato in his Burnside community garden recently. The tomato was 17-⅝ inches in diameter. He sold the tomato on the spot to a customer at the Neshoba Democrat for $10.

AUGUST 8, 2001

Choctaw Central High School has named their new girl’s basketball coach and it is Walter Wilson. Wilson led the CCHS boys’ team to four trips to the MHSAA State Tournament and a Class 2A State Championship in ‘98. Willis Tullos was the previous girl’s basketball coach and has stepped down to take another job at CCHS in July. Tullos did however lead the Lady Warriors to three state championships. 

 

AUGUST 10, 2011

Standout golfer, Justin Hundley, of Philadelphia, has signed a national letter of intent to continue his career at East Central Community College in Decatur. Hundley was a two-time All-District selectionat Neshoba Central High School, where he also received most valuable player honors his senior year. The people present with him while he was signing are; his parents, Anglea Hundley and Sammy Clemons Jr., of PHiladelphia, and ECCC golf coach, Chris Clark.
