MARCH 14, 1941

Miss Patty Sue Williams, daughter of Mrs. Kate Williams and the late Brown Williams of Philadelphia, was recently elected President of the Delta Gamma sorority at the University of Mississippi. She leaves for the University of Oklahoma, in Norman, Oklahoma, to represent Mississippi Chapter at the national convention.   

MARCH 8, 1951

T.J.  Durrett has been named by the Philadelphia City School Board to head the schools for the coming school year. Mr. Durrett succeeds J.A. Nowell, who recently resigned after serving during the past three years. 

Neely Sanford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Sanford was named Queen of the Pi Kappa Alpha Cotton Ball at the Heidelberg Hotel Victory room in Jackson. A sophomore at Millsaps College, Miss Sanford was chosen from five finalists by Showman Billy Rose. She is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

MARCH 9, 1961

Ray Gipson was named by the Board of Alderman as a member of the Philadelphia City School Board, to succeed J.M. Lofton, Sr., who recently resigned. Mr. Gipson is a graduate of the local high school, Mississippi State College, with a MA degree and taught in the school of Business Administration for two years following his graduation in his alma mater.

Pfc. Otis Guy Gross, who has been in the service for the past several months is now stationed at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colorado. Before entering the service, the young serviceman attended the Philadelphia High School. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Gross, with whom he made his home.  

MARCH 12, 1971

Suzy Hand, first chair flute in the Philadelphia High School Band, has been selected for a six week tour of Europe with the Band of America. A senior, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mr. Max Hand and is also drum majorette. Stan Yates, first chair trumpet, has been named to the Lions All State Band and will go to Atlantic City for the Lions Convention in July. a junior, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ytes, and is a star basketball and football player. 

Mrs. Mary Gipson has been named Woman of the Year by the Philadelphia Business and Professional Women’s Club. She will be honored at a coffee in the Home Demonstration kitchen of the courthouse. Mrs. Gipson has been a member of the Park Commission for five years and presently serves on the Beautification Committee. 

MARCH 5, 1981

Jim Hardy, principal at Neshoba Central High School, announced today that Roger Owen has been elected to serve as head basketball coach for the 1981-82 school year. Coach Owen comes to Neshoba Central from Meridian High School where he served as boys’ coach for the past season. 

Rusty Smith, son of Dr. and Mrs. Ross Smith, has been selected as the STAR Student from Philadelphia High School. Smith named Mrs. Sarah McKay as the STAR Teacher. Smith attends Philadelphia High School where he serves as Parliamentarian for the Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America.  

MARCH 13, 1991

Randy and J.B. Files recently caught this blue catfish weighing ten pounds, and two ounces, in Bluff Lake on the Noxubee Refuge.

 

MARCH 7, 2001

The Lady Chiefs of Tucker Elementary School placed first in the annual Choctaw Tribal Schools basketball tournament at the Tucker Community Gymnasium as they defeated the Lady Warriors of Choctaw Central Middle School, 48-45. In winning the tournament, they also claimed a perfect 12-0 record for the season.

MARCH 9, 2011

Mary Margaret Bailey was named Neshoba County’s Junior Miss. The theme of this year’s program was, “Peace, Love and Junior Miss”. Bailey is the daughter of David and Dee Dee Bailey. She currently attends Philadelphia High School and aspires to attend Mississippi State University following graduation.
