FEBRUARY 28, 1941

Sam Stribling, of Philadelphia, son of Dr. W.J. Stribling, has been announced as one of the 14 varsity students eligible for membership in Phi Eta Sigma, national honorary scholastic fraternity for freshmen. Young Stribling, graduate of Philadelphia High School in the class of 1940, set a fine record zt Ole Miss during the first semester. He made straight “A’s” in all courses.   

FEBRUARY 22, 1951

Horace Heidrich of Laurel, President of the State Baptist Brotherhood organization, will be the guest speaker at the Associational Rally at the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia.

The following students have been named in the Who’s Who contest for the seventh grade in the Bond Consolidated School, James Hodge as sponsor: Prettiest girl, Shirley Fulton; Most handsome boy, Lemuel Jackson; Most talent girl, Margaret Fulton; and Most talent boy, Jimmie Robert Jones.  

FEBRUARY 23, 1961

Rated as the best team in the Choctaw Conference, the Philadelphia Tornadoettes emerged victorious when they won over Canton girls, to the tune of 64 to 56 in the closing hours of the tournament. Downing teams from Louisville, Ackerman, and Eupora, the local team qualified for the play-offs of the Choctaw Conference Championship in Kosciusko.

FEBRUARY 25, 1971

Winners of the six annual football awards at Neshoba Central High School were announced at the Awards Banquet by coach Bobby Posey. The men are; Sammy Cumberland, Most Valuable Lineman; Stanley Copeland, Most Improved Player; Steve Burt, Most Valuable Back; and Ricky Coghlan, Most Valuable Player and Scholar-Athlete Award. 

FEBRUARY 26, 1981

Bryan Collins has been selected as a Spirit of America XI Honoree. He is the 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Collins of Vicksburg. He is also the grandson of Mrs. Sarah Richardson and the late Alfred Richardson of Philadelphia. He was selected all-conference nose guard and most valuable defensive lineman of South Central A. Academy his sophomore year.

Norman Hudson, Diane Backstrom, Connie Lee, and Buddy Killen were among the four Neshoba Central High School Basketball players that was named to the Mid-Mississippi All-Conference Team.  

FEBRUARY 27, 1991

Shayne Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Martin, has been named to the Mississippi High School All-Star Football team. All-Star players are recommended by high school coaches across the state, then approximately 40 players are chosen for this honor. Martin recently signed a full scholarship with East Central Community to play football.

FEBRUARY 28, 2001

Choctaw Central High School’s Chantay Frazier (20) battles for a rebound against Hazelhurst in the semifinal of MHSAA Girls 3A South State Tournament. CCHS lost to Hazelhurst, but beat Forest to earn third place and advance to the state tournament. Choctaw Central won its first-round game in the state tournament by a score of 84-50 over Independence.

Brent Howell recently caught this 5 ½ pound bass in a private pond in Neshoba County.  

FEBRUARY 23, 2011

Adam Moore placed second in the Regional Power Lift in the 181-pound weight class. James Harris placed third in the 123-pound weight class. Both will advance to South State at Lake High School. Herschel Smith is the powerlifting coach at Union High School. 

Famed Philadelphia High School football standout Marcus Dupree was presented with a Concurrent Resolution from the Mississippi Senate honoring his “high powered football career that was cut short by injuries”. Senator Giles Ward, R-Louisville, presented the resolution to Dupree at the Capitol.
