JANUARY 17, 1941

Jimmie Corder, County Agent here, was introduced as a new member of the Philadelphia Rotary Club, the induction having been made in most able manner by Dees Stribling.    

JANUARY 18, 1951

Officers of Hamas Temple, of Meridian, were elected with C.H. (Shine) Hays named assistant Rabban. Other officers were: D.A. Dorman, Potentate, Long Beach; Scott Bailey, Chief Rabban, Meridian; John E. Wright, P.P. High Priest and Prophet, Meridian; B.J. Carter Jr., P.P. Treasurer, Meridian; Martin L. Gunn, Recorder, Meridian; Mike Williams, Oriental Guide, Meridian. 

JANUARY 19, 1961

Two young men from the county have left for the armed service, one in the Army and the other for the Air Force. Both volunteered through the local recruiting office, according to Sgt. O.J. Smith, recruiting officer. Jesse E. Greenlee of the Arlington Community, left for Camp Chafee, Arkansas, where he will train with the army, while Claude Worrell of Philadelphia, has gone to Lackland Air Base, with the Air Force.

JANUARY 21, 1971

Emmett York, tribal chairman of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, checks out the new hydraulic chair in the new dental clinic in the recently completed Neighborhood Youth Facility at Pearl River Reservation. The people present are; Head dental officer, Dr. Tommy Johnson, Calvin Isaac, Service Unit Director; and Mrs. Cornelia Bacon, dental assistant. 

JANUARY 15, 1981

Marla Olphiant’s painting, “Sly Look”, has completed its tour with the Arkansas Wildlife Association. The painting was one of 60 selected for the traveling show which toured several Arkansas cities. 

Philadelphia native Robert H. Graham is one of 16 individuals, families and businesses who became members of the Chancellor's Trust at The University of MIssissippi during 1980.  Graham is a 1977 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Ole Miss and a recipient of the 1977 Taylor Medal in Liberal Arts.  

JANUARY 23, 1991

Gene Naylor, general manager of Pepsi Cola in Meridian was presented with a scrapbook containing pictures of the 1990 Heart ‘O Dixie Triathlon by Scott Bounds, President of the Philadelphia Sertoma Club and David Byars, 1990 Heart ‘O Dixie Triathlon Race director. Pepsi Cola of Meridian was the 1990 Heart ‘O Dixie Triathlon’s major sponsor. 

Air National Guard Airman Amy C. Stokes has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. During the six weeks of training the airman studied Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. Stokes is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Stokes of Philadelphia.

JANUARY 24, 2001

Ted Pope was recently selected as firefighter of the year for 2000-2001 at Longino Central Volunteer Fire Department.

JANUARY 19, 2011

D. Joseph Kilgore recites the oath of office for Chancery Court Judge for the Sixth District. He was elected to the judgeship without opposition after being appointed earlier to fill the remaining term of J. Max Kilpatrick, who retired from the judgeship on June 30.
