JANUARY 3, 1941

At a meeting of the Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, T.A. Webb, Executive Vice-President of the Citizens Bank, was unanimously chosen as President for the first six months of 1941. Mr. Webb has long been identified with the activities of the body and has been at the forefront in movements designed to benefit the town and the county in every way possible.    

JANUARY 4, 1951

2nd Lieutenant Willie McGovern of the U.S. Army Nurses Corp has been called to active duty and will report at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Lt. McGovern was a member of the active reserves. She served 13 months in the Army during WWII at Oliver General Hospital, Augusta Georgia. Her sister, Miss Ursual McGovern was also a member of the Army Nurses Corp. seeing active service in WWII. 

JANUARY 5, 1961

Mr. and Mrs. Duke Thornton are in Washington, D.C. for several days where they are attending a Moral Rearrangement Conference at the Shoreham Hotel, which is being attended by industrial leaders from all parts of the country. 

JANUARY 7, 1971

Airman Larry C. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carlton C. Smith of Collinsville, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. He has been assigned to Keesler AFB, Ms. for training in communications electronics systems. Airman Smith, a 1969 graduate of Beulah Hubbard High School, Little Rock, Ms. attended United Electronics Institute, Birmingham, Alabama.

JANUARY 1, 1981

Forrest Bridges nabbed his fifth deer of the year Friday when he killed this eight pointer in Montgomery County. It weighed 214 pounds. Its antlers were 23 inches long with a 21 inch span in between. Bridges’ nephew, Bill Adams of Jackson was also present. 

JANUARY 9, 1991

Old times were remembered recently when three World War II veterans were reunited. The three recalled days spent in the U.S. California 46 years ago. The men are; Red Oliver of Centerville, Quinton R. Marshall of Philadelphia, and L.H. Linder of Pascagoula.

JANUARY 10, 2001

Melody Griffin, a senior at Philadelphia High School was selected for Student of the Month by the Philadelphia Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was presented with a certificate by Jane Thomas. Melody is the daughter of Bill and Janice Griffin. 

JANUARY 5, 2011

Philadelphia Tornado standout C.J. Johnson is gearing up to play in the annual National Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Lee Ann Fulton, Philadelphia Elementary School Principal, was present with him.
