DECEMBER 27, 1940

First woman to make a hole in one in Puerto Rico is Mrs. Follett Bradley, who got her ace on a golf course atop a 16th-century fortress in ancient San Juan. Her husband is an air officer of the Department of Puerto Rico.

Havana-bound are Mr. and Mrs. Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Jr., and Prince and Princess Hohenlobe of Poland. Biddle was a U.S. ambassador to Poland until the German occupation of that country. The princess is the daughter of Mrs. Biddle; her husband is attached to the Polish embassy in Washington.   

DECEMBER 29, 1950

Holy Rosary Church, Tucker Community, has been remodeled and completely redecorated inside. New windows have been put in and the floors refinished with inlaid linoleum placed in the aisles and rugs in the sanctuary. The work has been done by the parishioners under the direction of Father Theodore.

Bob (Knockout) Murphy, San Diego, California, is a southpaw to be reckoned with in boxing circles. The 28-year-old boxer has 46 knockouts to his credit in 54 fights. His latest knockout was against Jerry McManus of Jersey City, New Jersey. 

DECEMBER 29, 1960

Recruit, Larry Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Mason, of Neshoba, has been assigned to Company A, 5th Battalion, 5th training regiment at Fort Jackson, S.C. for eight weeks of Basic Combat Training.

DECEMBER 31, 1970

Susie Hand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Hand, is a recent pledge of Phi Mu Social sorority at Mississippi State University. Miss Hand is a 1970 graduate of Philadelphia High School.

Mr. Tommy Lee Latimer of Philadelphia has been awarded the William B. Turner Scholarship for $726 per semester at Mississippi State University. Latimer, a Dean’s List scholar, is a sophomore majoring in psychology. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, a social fraternity. He is the son of Mrs. Hugh W. Latimer of Philadelphia.

DECEMBER 25, 1980

Kenneth Madison, President of the Philadelphia School Board, presents a plaque to head football coach Joe Wood on behalf of the trustees and employees of the schools. 

Laura Dean Anthony, daughter of Otha and Kathadean Anthony of Philadelphia, won the Christmas Belle Pageant in Newton. The pageant was held in the Clark County Auditorium.  

JANUARY 2, 1991

Chad Norton, was recently inducted into the Society of Scholars in the Arts and Sciences at Mississippi State University. Norton was one of 14 selected from the 270 qualified candidates. Norton is a pre-med major and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Norton. His grandparents are Mrs. Louise Latimer and Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Norton, all of Philadelphia. 

Mrs. Mandy Rush of Philadelphia bids farewell to her ninth son, Eugene Rush, prior to his departure for Camp Shelby. The National Guardsman is in the welding unit. He is the son of the late Willie Rush.

JANUARY 3, 2001

These students from Neshoba Central Elementary School were winners in a coloring contest sponsored by a local restaurant. The ones that receive the prizes are; Joel Whitney, a first-grader in Mrs. Shelton’s class and Le’Trey Moore, a student in Mrs. Logan’s third-grade class. Lynn Vaughn presented the prizes to them. 

DECEMBER 29, 2010

Students in Mrs. D. Smith’s second-grade class at Philadelphia Elementary School grew two medium-sized watermelons in their garden. Some of the students who help grow them are: Kambree Houston, Aliyah Coleman, and Libby Collins. 

Sheriff’s deputies Robert Sistrunk and Wendell Walker were recognized as Deputies of the Year during the annual EMS Banquet.
