DECEMBER 13, 1940

Jeptha F. Barbour Sr., of Yazoo City, one of the state’s outstanding attorneys, was appointed  circuit judge of the Seventh Judicial District, effective to succeed Judge Julian P. Alexander; who takes office then as a member of the Supreme Court.  

DECEMBER 8, 1950

Pvt. Zane Coghlan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Coghlan of the Dixon Community, is with the 7th Division in Korea. Pft. Coghlan, entered the armed service this year and has been overseas for several months, going direct to Korea. He was a high school graduate of Zephyrhill High School.

DECEMBER 8, 1960

Ruth Skinner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Skinner of Union represented Mississippi in the National Vegetable Growers Association meeting at Colorado Springs, Colorado in the 4-H division. Miss Skinner was the national winner in variety trials to become eligible to attend the convention. She grew 73 varieties of vegetables this year.

DECEMBER 10, 1970

Emmett York, chairman of the Tribal Council, Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, receives a citation from Thomas M. Reid, assistant to Louis R. Bruce, commissioner, Bureau of Indian Affairs. The award cited York’s long and useful service to his people. 

Jimmie Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie W. Moore, of Edinburg, has been named Coach of the Year in the Parkway Conference. Moore, a 1961 graduate of Edinburg High School, is football coach of Hamilton, Mississippi.

DECEMBER 11, 1980

The Reverend Dominic Cangemi, S.T. receives the keys to Holy Cross Catholic Church and the church register from the Most Rev. Joseph B. Brunini, bishop of the Jackson Diocese, after installation services. The Rev. Cangemi is the newly appointed priest at Holy Cross. He comes to Philadelphia from Lorman where he served as professor of Philosophy at Alcorn University. 

Larry Lewis recently bagged this 10 point deer with a muzzleloader. Lewis killed the deer while hunting in Noxubee County. 

DECEMBER 12, 1990

Philadelphia’s Memory Hunter tries for two points during action against Heidelburg in the Union Invitational Tournament. The Lady Tornadoes were defeated by the Lady Oilers 61-42.

Patty Sims, representing Neshoba County Farm Bureau, placed as a top five finalist in the age 18 and older talent division at the annual Farm Bureau state convention. She sang “Kiss Me in the Rain”. Patty is a vocalist in the “Collegiates” at East Central Community college. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Sims. 

DECEMBER 13, 2000

Philadelphia Elementary Beta members recently helped provide fun activities for the children of play ground volunteers. During quiet time, the Beta members shared a favorite story with younger children. The members are; Hannah Moody, Megan Martin, Caitlin Bounds, and Ben Duncan. 

Neshoba Central’s John Mark Kilpatrick (15) clears the ball out during the Rockets’ 2-1 division soccer win over West Point High School.

DECEMBER 8, 2010

Depot Bowling celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting. In attending the ribbon cutting was; David Schitoskey, Wayne Veazey, Lisa Howell, Gary Sumpter, Mallory Price, April Price, Mike Price, Keith Lillis, Paige Richardson, Mayor James Young, Dawn Wells, Heather Reinhardt, Tyler Wells as the Depot Bowling Mascot, David Vowell, Dee Hill, and Joe Vines.

Madison Breazeale, age 8, daughter of DeWayne and Heather Breazeale, killed her first deer, an eight point while hunting with her dad on private land.
