AUGUST 23, 1940

Mr. Frank G. Fancher recently brought in a huge ear of corn to the Democrat office. The ear of corn contained 22 rows of corn, was 8’1-2” in length, with a circumference of 10 inches. Together with the shuck the corn weighed 2 pounds. Mr. Fancher has about one acre of this particular variety of corn that is producing heavily.

AUGUST 25, 1950

Dr. W.H. Barnard, the newly elected PTA director of District Six, is attending a special three-weeks workshop for state PTA leaders at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Barnard is one of the two representing Mississippi on state fellowships set up for such workers.

AUGUST 25, 1960

Daniel Porter Jordan Jr., is shown receiving the second annual Neshoba County Fair Association Youth Award from Public Service Commissioner Norman A. Johnson Jr. Dan, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. D.P. Jordan of Philadelphia. He is 22 years old and a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi. 

Recruit Erwin W. Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin W. Gray of Union, is presently assigned to Company A., 19th Battalion, 5th Training Regiment of the U.S. Army Training Center, Infantry at Fort Jackson, S.C. where is undergoing eight weeks of Basic Combat Training.

AUGUST 27, 1970

Cindy Fulton, drum majorette at Neshoba Central High School, is shown in her new uniform. Miss Fulton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Huston Fulton of Philadelphia, will be on hand when the Rockets meet Forest this Friday. The game will be played in Forest.

AUGUST 28, 1980

Tony Thomas receives the 1980 Neshoba County Fair Youth Achievement Award from Norman A. Johnson, Jr., Fair Association president. The recipient is a 1980 honor graduate of Philadelphia High School. Accompanying him are  his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thomas.

AUGUST 29, 1990

Dene Fulton was crowned Neshoba County’s 1991 Young Woman of the Year. She is the daughter of Larry and Joyce Fulton. She was also the creative and performing arts winner. First alternate was Jenny Hardy who is the daughter of Allen and Nancy Hardy.

David Moore with his Grand Champion Jersey Cow won Jersey Senior Champion. David was also the first place winner in the 16-18 age division of showmanship in the Neshoba County Fair Dairy Show.

AUGUST 23, 2000

Madison Hardy, 11, entertains at the Mississippi Junior Miss Pageant at the Temple Theater in Meridian. She sang several songs and was interviewed on stage by master of ceremonies Terry C. Burton.

AUGUST 25, 2010

The Choctaw Central High School Solar Car Team has the opportunity to participate in the World Solar Car Race in Australia in 2011 after winning a national championship this summer. The team won the Hunt-Winston Solar Car Challenge, a cross-country race beginning on July 18 at the Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth, Texas, and ending on July 25 at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
