AUGUST 9, 1940

Mr. George W. Mars took his first airplane ride at the age of 75. He liked it, and it was not a hop. It was a real trip. Mr. Mars said his son-in-law made the reservations and put him in charge of the chief-pilot., who kept him posted along the way as to location and altitude.

AUGUST 11, 1950

Congressman Arthur Winstead places the crown on Miss Ann Burchfield of Arlington Community, as she was declared the winner of the 1950 Beauty Contest at the opening ceremonies of the Fair. The Beauty Contest is sponsored by the Philadelphia Business and Professional Women’s Club.

James Clifford Breazeale, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Breazeale and Samuel Anderson McNeil, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd McNeil left in August for San Diego, after enlisting int he U.S. Navy for four years. When the young men who have recently graduated from the local high school, complete their boot training they will be transferred to a service school.

AUGUST 11, 1960

C.V. Mitchell of Philadelphia with the Lamar Life Insurance Co., received word that he had won a four day trip to one of the nations truly luxury resort hotel. As an ward for superior service his company is sending Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell on an all expense paid trip to Grand Hotel at Point Clear., Alabama.

AUGUST 13, 1970

Bill Greenleaf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Greenleaf, was selected as the recipient of the 1970 Youth Achievement Award given each year during the Neshoba County Fair. Norman Johnson Jr., president of the Neshoba County Fair Association presented the award.

AUGUST 14, 1980

Nancy Bridges will direct the Neshoba Central High School band this year in field exercises. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Bridges. She recently attended a camp for drum majors and majorettes at the University of Southern Mississippi.

AUGUST 8, 1990

April Gurganus has placed first or close to first for the last several years in the Mississippi State 4-H Horse Show. This year was no exception, as she placed first at the 1990 State 4-H Horse Show in the 12-13 year old division.

AUGUST 9, 2000

Joanna Bates was presented the Bo Russell Memorial Scholastic Award during Mississippi's 2001 Junior Miss competition. She is the daughter of Darrel and Naomi Bates. Bates, Neshoba Countys Junior Miss, said the competition was the most memorable week of my entire life. It was a thrill.Bates is a freshman at Mississippi College.

AUGUST 11, 2010

Neshoba County 4-H Lee Jones placed first in the Tractor Operation contest at this years 4-H Club Congress. He will be representing Mississippi in the National 4-H Engineering competition in Tractor Operation at Purdue University. Mr. Jason Ward presented Lee with this award.
