JULY 28, 1940

Garland Gray and Graves (Buck) Seward left for Montgomery, Alabama where they will report for physical examination for entrance as U.S. Air Corps Flying Cadets. Candidates who pass the physical tests will next be required to undergo written examination. If successful, they will be admitted to a training course to fit them as pilots in Uncle Sam’s reserve air corps.

JULY 28, 1950

Radio station WHOC was presented an award of certificate of appreciation for presenting the transcribed weekly radio program VOICE OF THE ARMY, over a lengthy period of time. The award was presented to WHOC by Col. O.J. Smith, local recruiting officer for Philadelphia.

JULY 28, 1960

Sherrell Marshall, Philadelphia, has received a Citizenship Scholarship t Mississippi College. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Marshall of Philadelphia is a graduate of Philadelphia High School and East Central Junior College. He will be junior at Mississippi College. Marshall lettered in basketball two years at East Central, was the number two scorer in the junior college conference, and was named to the ten man All-State Junior College Team.

Bobby Tingle, of Philadelphia will be one of the bulwarks in the north line at the annual All-Star football game to be placed in jackson. Tingle was All-Choctaw Conference this senior year here and lettered three years as a member of the tornado team. He is the son of Mrs. James Adkins.

 JULY 30, 1970

Tresha Dunigan is crowned the new Miss Neshoba County. Miss Dunigan was one of the 27 contestants in the pageant. First alternate was Janice Bryan and second alternate was Susan Joyner. 

Neshoba County’s David and Elizabeth Edwards are a young couple planning to manufacture a future in the manufacturing milk business. The Edwards operate a modern 70-acre dairy farm near Philadelphia and ship milk to a cheese processing company in Newton.

JULY 31, 1980

Stacie Therrell was crowned winner in the 1980 Young American Miss Pageant. Stacie is the 12 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Therrell. She received a trophy, crown, and a bouquet of flowers. She will be entertaining in the Miss Neshoba County Pageant and will sing a medley of songs and will be accompanied by Mrs. Lee Dukes.

JULY 25, 1990

Billy Lowe and his wife, Edith, of Philadelphia, grew a 17 inch long cucumber in their backyard garden. it weighed almost three pounds.

Cyrus Ben, received a trophy and a blue ribbon in the 4-H conversation visual presentation contest held at the Southeast District contest in Laurel. Presenting the award is Daney Jackson of the Lauderdale County Extension staff. Cyrus is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Ben and is a member of the Chahta Cloverleaf 4-H Club of the Pearl River Community of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

JULY 26, 2000

Anthony Steele, 17, was the first Neshoba County finisher in the Heart of Dixie Triathlon. His time of 2:23:03 was good for 68th place overall. With his finish, Steele, who will be a senior at Neshoba Central High School this fall, received the Dr. Dickie Nowell Memorial Award which goes to the top local finisher each year.

JULY 28, 2010

Casey Lewis captured the Neshoba County Fairs 2010 Youth Achievement Award prior to the Miss Neshoba County Pageant. She is the daughter of Pam Lewis and Mike and Sharon Lewis. She recently graduated from Philadelphia High School and had the honor of being the salutatorian of her graduating class. In the fall, she plans to attend Meridian Community College and major in nursing.
