MAY 3, 1940

Dorothy Sue King will be valedictorian and Sam Stribling will be salutatorian of the 1940 graduating class of Philadelphia High School. Dorothy Sue, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. King. Sam, is the son of Dr. W.J. Stribling and the late Mrs. Stribling.

Miss Doris Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Miller of this city, has made an outstanding record at East Mississippi Junior College at Scooba, where she is a sophmore. She has the distinction of being Editor-in-Chief of the Collegian, the college paper, and was elected Miss E.M.J.C. in the annual Who's Who Contest.

MAY 5, 1950

Everett Leo Spivey has been awarded Honorable Mention in the third annual Rural and Ranch-Southern Agriculturist. He is the son go Mr. and Mrs. Leo Spivey. He won this award for his essay "Achieving Better Living on the farm." Everette is the vice president of the 4-H Coldwater Club.

MAY 5, 1960

The American Legion will honor the Veterans of World War One with a program and super at their regular monthly meeting. The Judge, Henry Lee Rogers will be the principal speaker. Otha D. Jackson, Commander will be the presiding officer.

Rufus Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Williams of Union, recently won first place in the Junior Division of the county 4-H Talent Show. His selection was Norwegian Concerts by Edward Greig. Rufus is a member of the seventh grade at House.

MAY 7, 1970

Winners from Coldwater Baptist Church in the State Baptist Intermediate and Junior Memory Work Drills held recently were Intermediates; Judy Belk, Pamela White, Juniors Bonnie Thornton, Patsy Sharp, and Deborah Sue White. The contests were held at Van Winkle Baptist Church in Jackson.

MAY 1, 1980

Martha Smith, acting supervisor at the Philadelphia post office, presents a service award to Joseph D. Parker who recently retired as a rural carrier after 28 years. The award was presented Friday at the post office.

MAY 2, 1990

The Neshoba County Junior 4-H Wildlife Judging Team placed first at the 4-H Conservation Field Day. Members are Julia Barrett, Joni Hicks, April Warren, and Obie Burrage. Joni was also the third high individual in the contest. Presenting them with their awards is Mr. Jeff Wilson, the Field Representative for MACD.

MAY 3, 2000

Philadelphia Police Department Patrolmen, John Lily and Harbert Johnson, carry the torch for the Special Olympics in a two-mile run down the bypass. The torch, brought to town by Special Olympics State Director Theron Edge, began its journey in Memphis, Tennessee.

MAY 5, 2010

Avery Duncan was selected as the president of the junior Beta Club during the annual convention. He represented a two minute speech and was required to answer a random question drawn on stage as a part of the campaign. He is a student of Philadelphia Middle School. Beta Runs on Duncan a one-minute skit performed by the Philadelphia Beta Club as part of Duncans campaign, captured second place award.
