APRIL 26, 1940

H.D. (Bill) McKay, a native of Neshoba County was elected mayor of Louisville, defeating F.L. Reich. The vote was 421 to 270. Mayor J.H. Watson was eliminated in the first primary a week ago.

Reports that Russia has established naval and air bases near the Aleutian islands, congressional sources in Washington said Saturday, are behind intensified army efforts to strengthen defenses in Alaska.

APRIL 28, 1950

In the North State track meet, the Tornado track team placed only one man in the finals. A. J. Kilpatrick who took third in the 440 yard dash. He will compete in the State track meet in Clinton. The Tornadoes placed in most trial events.

APRIL 28, 1960

Miss Lisa Cole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Cole, was recently elected house president of Keirn, junior dormitory at Mississippi State College for Women, Columbus, Mississippi.

C.L. Kirkland Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Kirkland , Sr., graduated from Jackson Barber College, Jackson, Mississippi with an average of 98 in Barber Science. He will begin his practice at Grubbs Barber Shop in Jackson.

APRIL 30, 1970

Jackie Walton and Mike Seales, received checks for their posters entered in the clean up and beautification poster contest. Presenting the checks is Mrs. Connie Sampsell, manger of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Chamber of Commerce. The children are students at Neshoba Central Elementary School.

APRIL 24, 1980

The yard of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Kirkland on Golf Course Road was named Yard of the Month by the Home Arts Club. The Kirklands were presented a potted plant by Four Season's Florist and Garden Center.



APRIL 25, 1990

Mrs. Lillian Walton was selected for the National Community Service Award. Award by the American Association of Retired Persons. Presenting her the award is Mrs. Jo Ella Cosgrove, chairman of the community projects committee.

APRIL 26, 2000

Austin Sellers recently won honors at his first karate tournament. The Mississippi Open Karate Tournament was held at Hinds Community College in Jackson. He was awarded third place in sparing and fourth in Kata. His sensei, who is also his dad, is Eddie Sellers.

Choctaw Central Middle School is proud of Bernita Starling, eight grader. Bernita is the first Choctaw Tribal School student of place at the Mississippi Science and Engineering State Science Fair. She received honorable mention.

APRIL 28, 2010

Josiah Monk, recently won first place in the Personal Narrative category in the 2010 Native American Student Artist Competition. The Choctaw Challengers Instructor is Frankie Germany.

2010 Neshoba County Shrine Club officers were recently elected. They are; Butch Hodgins, President; Jerry Williams, Vice President; Jarvis Winstead, Treasurer, and Dennis Dontrich, Secretary.
