FEBRUARY 16, 1940

With the U.S. Navy increasing its strength, the old frigate, "Constellation", built in 1797, is once more in active service at the Newport, R.L. training station. Increased enlistments sent 2,000 instead of a normal 1,200 naval recruits to Newport, and some of the men are quartered on the frigate, where they'll receive training.

Presidential approval of a WPA project to complete the construction of school buildings and campus, improvements of the Union consolidated school in Newton County with an allotment of $4805 has been announced by Senator Theo G. Bilbo of Mississippi.



FEBRUARY 17, 1950

The pupils of Mrs. Helen Harpole Latimer were presented in one of the loveliest piano recitals ever held here in the high school auditorium. The following pupils of Mrs. Latimer participated: Mina Hooper, James Leigh, Billy Yates, Fay Creemonore, Neva Louise Glover, and Suanne Holland.

Johnny Farley, is a member of the Olson's All-American "Red Heads" will perform with other girl players at the local High School gym. Johnny is from Siloam Springs, Ark., and joined the Olson champions two years ago.

FEBRUARY 18, 1960

The Philadelphia High Tornado basketball team receives the championship trophy on the Choctaw Conference from Coach Howard Willoughy after defeating DeKalb in the finals at Canton. The Tornado starts defense of its District Four crown, playing the winner of the Winona-Carthage game.



FEBRUARY 19, 1970

Mrs. Erdis Chaney received her private pilot license from FAA examiner, Ben O White. Mrs. Chaney is the wife of Cpt. Ken Chaney, who is also a licensed pilot and employed as Staff Training Assistant with the local National Guard. The Chaney's have two sons named Irvis and Pat. They are also members of the Newton Flying Club.



FEBRUARY 21, 1980

Philadelphia Wal-Mart manager Tom Bailey won a plaque for being runner-up for Manager of the Year in the entire Wal-Mart chain. Bailey was in competition with managers from 278 Wal-mart stores from around the nation.



FEBRUARY 21, 1990

SPC Derwin Delane has been stationed in Berlin. He was chipping away at the Berlin Wall when he had his picture taken. He is an honor graduate receiving the Bronze Soldier Award in 1987. He is the son of Kay and Dennis Rains. His grandparents are Lucille and George Williams and the late Johnny McKinnion and Lonnie and Pernie Watkins.





FEBRUARY 16, 2000

Cassandra Richarte has been named the winner of the 1999-2000 Tools for Tomorrow All-American Vocational Winner. She is studying business and computer technology at the Votech Center. She is the daughter of Becky and Leroy Richarte. She will receive a personalized award certificate and $100 gift certificate.



FEBRUARY 17, 2010

Justin Kilpatrick signs a football scholarship to East Central Community College. The people present are; Coach Chuck Friend, his father Clyde Kilpatrick, his mother Karen Kilpatrick, and his sister Kelly Kilpatrick.

The Neshoba County Spelling Bee was held at Neshoba Central Elementary auditorium. Emily Cloys, a fifth-grader at Neshoba Central Elementary School, was the spelling bee champion. She will advance to the state Spelling Bee in Jackson.
