JANUARY 21, 1940

Sheriff makes six raids, brings in liquor and illegal slot machines. Officers making the raids were sheriff Will D. Brantley and Deputies Clarence Garrison, George Henry Hillman, Darris Wiliamson, and Bob Tindol with Clayton Lewis, County Attorney. Officers reported the finding of sixteen half pints of liquor and twelve pints full of liquor.



JANUARY 20, 1950

C.H. (Shine) Hays was named Oriental Guide when the election of officers for Hamassa Temple was held in Meridian. Mr. Hays defeated Ray Wilson of Laurel and J.T. Furr of Hattiesburg, on the first ballot by forty five votes. Mr. Hays succeeds S. Scott Bailey of Meridian who was promoted to Assistant Rabban.



JANUARY 21, 1960

Chief Warrant Officer Elzey J. Arledge is retiring from the U.S. Army after twenty years active duty. He is 41 years old and the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Arledge. Mr. Arledge plans to farm at his home in Philadelphia. He is married to the former Lois L. Mooney, and he has four children.


JANUARY 22, 1970

A.W. (Rack) Burt, president of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Chamber of Commerce, presents cash awards to winners of the 4-H Achievement Awards banquet. Winners were Peggy Thompson and Nora Thompson of Bogue Chitto; ronnie Alex, of Pearl River.



JANUARY 24, 1980

Mrs. Winnie Lee Goldman has been named Futura Woman of the Year. Mrs. Goldman and her husband, the late Alvin Goldman, have one daughter, Glenda. She is a member of the Philadelphia Association of Educators, Mississippi Association of Educators, and the National Education Association. Mrs. Goldman has contributed to the area of education for 20 years in the teaching career at Philadelphia Elementary School.



JANUARY 24, 1990

Airman 1st Class William W. Jayroe has graduated Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. Jayroe is the son of Sherry D. Kilgore and Aaron W. Jayroe. He is the 1989 graduate of Neshoba Central High School.



JANUARY 19, 2000

Kim Blackwell was recently chosen as the New Miss East Central Mississippi. She is the daughter of Ronald and Jan Blackwell. She will represent her five county region in the Miss Mississippi Pageant in Vicksburg.



JANUARY 20, 2010

The state winner of the Mississippi High School Essay contest, sponsored by the Town and Country Garden Club of Philadelphia, was Natasha Denise Harper, a senior at Philadelphia High School. The subject of the essay was "Respect the World Around Us". The object of this competition is to encourage students to realize the importance of taking care of our planet. Her state winning essay will be forwarded to the regional chairman where her essay will compete against five other state winners.
