June 1 1945
News came this week to families of two local sons, who have been prisoners of war for many months and from whom they have not heard in so long a time that hopes of eer hearing had begun to wane, that both have been released and will be home soon. They are Hoyt Withers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Withers here in Philadelphia, and Pfc. Robert L. Watkins, son of Mrs. Edd Watkins of the Dixon community.
S-Sgt. J.W. Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Evans of the Dixon community is missing in action over Tokyo since April 2.

Miss Judy Kinnard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Kinnard has been selected as "Miss Hospitality" to represent Philadelphia in the state-wide contest, announces Homer Lofton Hooper, chairman of the "Miss Hospitality" committee.
Southern Bell filed a $5,000,000 damage suit today against the communications Workers of America charging the Union with a "pattern of violence" during the recent strike designed to destroy telephone facilities and interfere with communication service to the public in the nine states served by the company.

Thirty-five Neshoba County students have been presented Library Staff pins by the Bookmobile Librarian in recognition of their services to their school libraries and their help in working with the Bookmobile books during this school year.

Mayor Allan King signed a proclamation designating June 9 to 15 as Family Unity Week. The proclamation said "The family is the basic unit of society."
Six outstanding boys from Philadelphia and Neshoba County were selected to attend the week of activities at American Legion Boy State at Hinds Junior College.

The Philadelphia mayor and board of aldermen last night rejected three separate bids for a $45,000 note to purchase land adjacent to Northside Park.
The Philadelphia Democratic Executive Committee voted Monday night to stand by its certification of Jimmy Lee Shannon as the nominee for alderman of Ward Four.

The National Weather Service awarded Neshoba County's official weather observer an award for 45 years of service at an open house at the NWS office in Jackson recently. Since 1950, W. Howard Cole has compiled daily weather readings for NSW record keepers.

Jeremy Boler may have thought his high school baseball career was over last month when the Philadelphia Tornadoes lost game two in the MHSAA Class 2A State Championship Series. However, the Philadelphia graduate still has one more game to play this Saturday when he and his North teammates take on the South in the Mississippi Association of Coaches 1A-2A-3A High School All-Star Game at Trustmark Park in Pearl.
