December 22, 1944

As the holiday season enters the final stretch before Christmas Day, it is reported by the merchants of Philadelphia that all previous sales records for the Yuletide will be shattered.

Final reports from the officials of the Neshoba County Sixth War Loan Drive reveal that the E bond quota was exceeded by $19,000.00. A total of $220,000.00 in E bonds was sold, against a county quota of $201,000.00.

December 23, 1954

Two of Neshoba County's first and best-known citizens celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last Sunday, when more than 300 guests and friends paid tribute to Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Hillman.

The Neshoba Home Demonstration club entertained their husband's and all the members of the community club with a social and pound supper on Friday night, December 17, in the new center.

December 24, 1964

Emerson Electric Manufacturing Company's Electronics and Space Division has received a contract for repair and modification of 39 different types of airborne radio navigation instruments for the armed services.

December 26, 1974

The Division of Comprehensive Health Planning, Office of the Governor, in Jackson, has received an application submitted on behalf of the Neshoba County Nursing Home of Philadelphia for a federal certificate of need for a capital expenditure of $900,000 to provide 40 additional skilled nursing care beds to the existing 40 bed facility in Philadelphia.

Most businesses and public offices in Philadelphia will be closed Jan. 1 and 2. It was suggested as a means of conserving electrical energy by utility and Chamber of Commerce officials.

December 26, 1984

The new McDonald's restaurant under construction on Pecan Ave. is scheduled to open Jan. 10. Bill Cunningham, the leadership for the new fast-food franchise, said that 70 employees already had been hired to work at the new restaurant.

A leak from a propane supply line which fills three large capacity storage tanks less than 30 yards from U.S. Electrical Motors was ignited last Wednesday around 4:45 p.m. The fire was controlled by members of the Philadelphia Fire Department, avoiding a near disastrous explosion.

December 28, 1994 

A veterans employee of the Mississippi Employment Security Commission will take over as executive director when the current head retires at the end of December. Thomas E. Lord, certified public manager, has been announced as appointed to the post.

Gloria Hadley, Mississippi's Institute on Alcohol and Tobacco-Free Schools 1994-95 Educator of the Year, was honored during a special institute banquet.

The president of the NAACP chapter here has voiced support for unified sports leagues at Northside Park after concerns were raised last week over perpetuating segregated leagues under a current $7 million renovation and expansion proposal.

When the 298th Corps Support Battalion from Philadelphia returns from active duty in February, National Guard officials say they will be taking a more direct route home.

Just over an acre of city-owned industrial property near the U.S. Motors facility could soon be home to another Dollar General after the Board of Aldermen voted last week to sell it in an unanimous decision.

A bridge over Spring Creek in northern Neshoba County is targeted for major repairs by the Board of Supervisors because of structural issues. The work will be paid for with the state monies.
