Neshoba County went over the top on its overall quota. The total overall quota as set by the state headquarters was $521,000. Total sales of all denomination bonds was $530,682.50.

The Philadelphia Business and Professional Woman's club is going to give a free picture show ticket to each child bringing 25 pounds of paper to the paper bin on the court square Saturday, August 12th. 

              

August 5, 1954

Frank Spruiell, a former gridiron great at Mississippi Southern College, has accepted an appointment as head football coach at Philadelphia High School, Superintendent T. J. Durrett announced today.

John M. Mathis, Presently Manager of the Cleveland Texas Chamber of Commerce and formerly Manager of the Polk County Chamber of Commerce of Navasota, Texas, has accepted the position as Manager of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce effective about the 15th of August.  

August 6, 1964

U.S. District Judge Sidney Mize Thursday dismissed a suit requesting appointment of U.S. commissioners in Mississippi's 82 counties for the protection of Civil Rights workers. 

August 8, 1974

First National Bank of Memphis bought $600,000 in Neshoba County bonds here Monday. The revenue from the bonds is to be used to help finance a $900,000 expansion to the Neshoba County Nursing Home.

Cherie Sampsell was named Miss Neshoba County at the opening event of the 1974 Neshoba County Fair Monday night. 

August 8, 1984

The office of the Neshoba County Sheriff's Department has moved from the courthouse to the county detention center, Sheriff Glenn Waddell has announced.

Michell Murphy, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Murphy of Union, was crowned the 1984 Miss Neshoba County Monday night at the Fairgrounds.

 

August 3, 1994  

Alan Windham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Windham of Philadelphia, was presented the 1994 Neshoba County Fair Outstanding Youth Achievement Award.

A dedicated Fair veteran will give up his post this week marking a changing of the guard at the Fairgrounds. Dwight Barrett will step down as manager of the Neshoba County Fair in the next several weeks after serving for nine years.

      August 11, 2004

A proposal that would more than double the size of Northside Park and incorporate sweeping design changes, adding amenities such as boating and bicycle trails, was unveiled last week.

Unless they raise taxes the Board of Supervisors will have to chop about $1 million off budget proposals totaling $6.5 million for fiscal year 2005.

After more than 20 years the historic Ellis Theater will once again show movies thanks to a partnership between the Arts Council and the county library.

Construction continues on the $55 million Choctaw Health Center set to open in the spring of 2015. The hospital is being built on the eastern side of the Reservation off New Frog Level Road.
