Firearms recovered in arrests

A rifle stolen from an MBI agent’s vehicle during a revival at The First Baptist Church last month is one of 11 guns seized after two arrests last week.

Nicholas Lamar Catchings, 34, of 406 Oswald Road, was and charged with three counts of grand larceny, including the rifle. He remains in the Neshoba County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.

Jeremy Howard Henry, 28, of 10400 Road 547, was arrested and charged with three counts of possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana in a vehicle and possession of paraphernalia.

He bonded out on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 25, the day after he was arrested on a $16,600 bond.

Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark said that Catchings was picked up on Nov. 24 in connection with a number of vehicle break-ins in which firearms were taken that were reported on Thursday, Nov. 19.

One of the items stolen was a Rock River Arms rifle issued by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to one of their agents. The gun was stolen from a vehicle parked downtown at The First Baptist Church during a Wednesday evening revival service, Clark said.

A joint investigation with his office, MBI and Mississippi Highway Patrol uncovered footage from a surveillance camera facing the church parking lot that allegedly shows Catchings taking the officer’s rifle from his vehicle.

The other car burglaries also attributed to Catchings, reported handguns stolen from vehicles parked at Neshoba General.

Clark said that Catchings gave them information that led them to Henry, who was picked up in a traffic stop the same day. A subsequent search warrant of his residence produced eleven firearms, all believed to be stolen.

Clark said that in addition to recovering and returning the MBI-issued rifle and two pistols taken from vehicles parked at Neshoba General, they were able to recover and return and pricey Sig Sauer handgun taken from a residence off of Deemer Road almost a year ago.

“This was probably worth more than the other guns combined,” Clark said.

Clark said that the owner of the gun was out of town in Texas at a competition — he is a professional bull rider — when he called him to deliver the news.

“I think that was a pretty good Christmas present for him,” Clark said. “He had basically given up hope of ever seeing that gun again and was excited to get it back. We have had a pretty good week with these guns and the recovery of $18,000 lawnmower.”

Clark said that they are still trying to track down the owner of seven of the recovered firearms.

“If a gun has been taken from your car recently, email me the description and the serial numbers to help identify your property,” Clark said. “Share as much information as you can to help prove ownership.”
