Tickets are on sale now for the showing of the classic movie “Field of Dreams” in the historic Ellis Theatre in February, which echoes Marty Stuart’s vision for the Congress of Country Music.

Dan Barnard, executive director of the Marty Stuart Congress of Country Music, said the “Field of Dreams” story has a lot of parallels to Stuart’s vision for the Ellis Theatre.

“In ‘Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner’s character’s willingness to build a baseball field in the middle of an Iowa cornfield has a noticeable connection to Marty’s willingness to build the Congress of Country Music and renovate the Ellis,” Barnard said. “Especially the iconic quote, ‘if you build it, he will come.’”

Tickets are on sale for $10 and will sell until Feb. 4, the day of the show. Barnard said there are only 18 tickets left to purchase.

“Field of Dreams” follows Iowa farmer Ray, and he hears a mysterious voice one night in his cornfield saying "If you build it, he will come." Ray feels the need to act, and despite taunts of lunacy, he builds a baseball diamond on his land, supported by his wife, Annie. Afterward, the ghosts of great players begin to emerge from the crops to play ball, led by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. But, as Ray learns, this field of dreams is about much more than bringing former baseball greats out to play.

Barnard said along with the movie, Alicia Malone with Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is the guest speaker along with Marty Stuart as emcee.

“Alicia and Marty will talk about the symbolic significance of the movie, and Alicia will provide some things about it that everyone may not know,” Barnard said. “The movie itself is a symbolic choice since its iconic quote references Marty’s vision for the Ellis and the Congress of Country Music.”

Turner Classic Movies is a TV network based in Atlanta, Ga., that specializes in showing the most significant classic films of all time from a massive film library.

TCM was originally interested in coming to the Ellis after Marty Stuart posted a music video on social media about Alicia Malone.

“This was Marty’s idea right from the beginning,” Barnard said. “The Ellis used to be a movie theater, and we wanted to be capable of showing movies here. ‘Field of Dreams’ is a baseball movie, but it has a spiritual quality to it and has a lot of connections to Marty’s vision. It’s a cool addition to our season and we’re looking forward to it.”

The “Field of Dreams” showing at the historic Ellis Theatre is on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets,  visit the Congress of Country Music website at www.congressofcountrymusic.org. Tickets are $10, and the show is on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
