Egg Bowl feature of holiday

The Egg Bowl will have our attention this week in all 82 counties.

Mississippi State needs a win to go bowling while Ole Miss needs a win as they move forward to hopefully brighter days in Oxford. I have enjoyed watching many Egg Bowls in person since 1970. Many of the games I have witnessed have been given names and hopefully they can add another name to this rivalry that has been played for way over 100 years.

The Thanksgiving kickoff in Starkville will be at 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPN.

Golden Eagles hurting

Southern Mississippi blew their chance to take over the lead in the Western Division of Conference USA as they lost to Western Kentucky. The loss was frustrating in many ways as the Golden Eagles could not convert on several third down plays and also only scored once on three trips inside the Red Zone. The Eagles are still in a three-way tie with Louisiana Tech and UAB in the West as each are sporting 5-2 marks within conference play. The biggest blow Saturday was quarterback Jack Abraham. He hurt his knee, and his status will be not known until game time. This week USM will travel to Florida Atlantic to take on the first place team from the East.

USM football center Drake Dorbeck of Vicksburg was named the first Golden Eagle to win the Kent Hull Trophy as the best offensive lineman in college football in our state. The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame will also announce the winner of the annual C-Spire Conerly Trophy given to the best college football player on Tuesday, December 3.

Alcorn State will host the SWAC Championship after defeating Jackson State, 41-6. The Braves will face the winner of the Southern and Grambling State game on December 7.
