County unemployment rate increases in Jan.

The January 2023 unemployment rate in Neshoba County was 3.9 percent, an increase of two-tenths of a percentage point when compared to the previous month, according to figures from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

The unemployment rate represents the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the civilian labor force for the county.

The Neshoba County labor force was 9,690 people in January, an  decrease of 30 when compared to last month. There were 380 unemployed people in January, an increase of 20 when compared to last month.

Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2023 was 3.5 percent, increasing two-tenths of a percentage point from the previous month’s rate of 3.3 percent. When compared to the January 2022 rate of 4.6 percent, the rate decreased 1.1 percentage points. The Nation’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2023 at 3.9 percent increased six-tenths of a percentage point over the month but was five-tenths of a percentage point lower than the year ago rate of 4.4 percent.

ississippi’s nonfarm employment decreased 13,500 over the month but increased 20,000 over the year.

Industry sectors registering the largest monthly employment losses were Trade, Transportation and Utilities; Professional & Business Services; and Leisure and Hospitality.

For the month of January 2023, 25 counties in Mississippi posted unemployment rates less than or equal to the state’s rate of 3.5 percent. Rankin and Union Counties posted the lowest unemployment rate for the month of January at 2.6 percent followed by Madison County at 2.7 percent. Jefferson County had the highest unemployment rate for January at 11.8 percent followed by Issaquena County at 7.9 percent.
