Cotton scores late 3-pointers to lift Warriors over Leake

Freshman Abram Cotton scored a pair of three-point shots in the final minute to lift the Choctaw Central Warriors to a 68-67 victory over Leake Central last week.

Injuries and sickness left the Warrior roster with eight healthy players so Coach Brent Farmer brought up players of his junior varsity team. Cotton was one of them and he made the most of his opportunity.

Leake Central led 9-6 after the first quarter. The Warriors came back to outscore the Gators 15-14 in the second quarter and trailed 23-21 at the half.

Choctaw Central outscored the Gators 23-21 in the third quarter. The score was tied at 44-44 going into the fourth quarter.

Leake Central took the lead. In the final minute, Cotton hit the first of his two 3 pointers to bring the Warriors within two points of the Leake Central lead. The Gators took the ball down court. Cotton deflected the ball and Choctaw Central took over, They came down and Cotton made his second shot to give the Warriors the lead. Choctaw Central held on for the victory.

Treundes Willis led with 17 points while William McKinney added 16. Gerald Isom scored 11 points and Cotton put in nine.

The Warriors now stand at 15-10 overall and 3-4 in the region. Both Choctaw Central basketball teams swept a pair of Region 4-4A victories last week. In addition to the win over Leake Central, the Warriors bested West Lauderdale 66-41. The Lady Warriors beat West Lauderdale 68-19 and Leake Central 73-56.

The Warrior teams have three games scheduled for this week, all at home. They were to host West Lauderdale on Monday and Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday. They close out the regular season at home with Senior night as they take on Leake Central.

The Lady Warriors currently stand at 21-4 overall and 7-0 in the region standings.

The Warriors scored big in the second quarter and held on for the victory.

Choctaw Central led 16-14 after the first quarter. The Warriors then outpointed the Knights 19-8 and led 35-22 at the half. Both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter. The Warriors outscored the Knights 21-9 in the final eight minutes of play.

William McKinney led the Warriors with 16 points while Chris Lewis scored 15.



Lady Warriors 68

West Lauderdale 19

Choctaw Central jumped out to a 54-15 halftime lead as they put the Lady Knights away.

Kyla Farmer led with 13 points while Melanie Thames added 10.



Lady Warriors 73

Leake Central 56

The Lady Warriors put this one away in the third quarter.

Choctaw Central led 17-12 after the first quarter. The Lady Warriors outpointed the Lady Gators 26-20 in the second quarter and led 43-32 at the half. In the third quarter, the Lady Warriors outscored Leake Central 27-13 to put the game away.

Thames led with 20 points while Tia’Rain Saunders scored 16 and Farmer scored 10.
