Choctaw Central teams claim 3 wins on the court

Both Choctaw Central basketball teams went undefeated in their last three games in prep basketball action.

The Choctaw Central boys are off to a 10-0 start. First, they scored a 75-31 win over Newton County. Then they played in the Joe Barlow tournament at St. Martin High School last week, where they took a 59-46 victory over Davidson (Alabama) High School and a 52-39 win over Theodore (Alabama) High School.

The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors stood at 7-2 coming into the week. First, they defeated Newton County 68-47. Then they played in the Barlow tournament, where they defeated St. Martin 62-47 and Moss Point 30-20.

Both Choctaw Central teams were to play at Neshoba Central on Tuesday. The Lady Warriors are scheduled to play Lafayette in the South Pontotoc tournament on Saturday.

 

Lady Warriors 62

Newton County 47

Mattison Bell scored 27 points to lead the Lady Warriors past Newton County.

The Lady Warriors built up a 28-17 halftime lead. Then they outscored the Lady Cougars 26-12 in the third quarter to put the win away. Kayla Farmer added eight points, while Kyla Bell, Malaka Morris and Tyra Billy all scored six points.

 

Lady Warriors 62

St. Martin 47

The Lady Warriors went up 41-23 at the half and rolled on to defeat St. Martin.

Bell led with 17 points. Kashahn Walker added 12 points and Farmer scored 10.

 

Choctaw Central 30

Moss Point 20

Moss Point took the air out of the ball to counter Choctaw Central’s fast-paced attack.

It was something new for his team, and coach Bill Smith said his team learned from the game.

“They used about 2 minutes every time they had the ball,” Smith said. “We learned from it and that will help if we face it again.”

The Lady Tigers took a 15-12 halftime lead. Choctaw Central outscored Moss Point 10-2 in the third quarter and led 22-14 going into the final quarter. They held Moss Point to three points in the final eight minutes while putting in eight points and took the win.

Bell led with 11 points, and Farmer scored nine.

 

Warriors 75

Newton County 31

The Warriors went up 21-5 in the first quarter and rolled to a big win over Newton County.

Peyton Mingo led with 10 points, while Abram Cotton and Allan John added nine points. Elias Bell and Thomas Tangle both scored eight points.

 

Warriors 59

Davidson 49

Thomas Tangle scored 27 points to lead the Warriors past Davidson (Alabama).

The Warriors built up a 32-13 halftime lead. Both teams scored 27 points in the final quarter.

 

Warriors 52

Theodore 39

The Warriors came on strong in the fourth quarter to defeat Theodore.

Choctaw Central led 23-12 at the end of the first half. Theodore outscored the Warriors 16-9 in the third quarter. Leading 32-28 going into the final period, the Warriors outscored Theodore 22-11 to ice the win.

Tangle led with 28 points while Cotton put in eight points.

Hayden Jones was named the MVP of the tournament. Tangle was named to the all-tournament team.
