The first phase of the Booker T. Washington gym renovation project is close to complete, officials said.

Philadelphia aldermen were told during last Tuesday’s meeting that the gym floor would be installed once contractors were satisfied with the level of moisture in the building. The second phase will be the installation of new handicapped assessable bathrooms and entrances, and will begin later this year.

“Getting the first phase done was great news,” Mayor James Young said. “We knew the floor was going to be tedious. I am in no rush. We want to make sure everything is done right so the building will last for years to come.”

The aldermen approved two items of business for the project. They agreed to pay Perry Construction $215,840 for work the company has completed. They also agreed to a change order proposed by Waggoner Engineering totaling $22,640 to seal an area around the ceiling that will keep moisture out.

In another matter, aldermen set several dates involving their work on the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget.

There will be a work session on the budget Aug. 15 starting at 5 p.m. There will be a public hearing on the tax levy for the budget Aug. 30 at 5 p.m.

In other action, aldermen voted to:

• Approve a motion to pay D’s Construction $8,500 for renovation work at City Hall to enlarge the Municipal Court office. This includes taking in the space that has been used for a conference room;

• Approve for the mayor to sign at Memo of Understanding with the Mississippi Department of Transportation and First United Methodist Church regarding drainage problem along the south right-of-way line of Highway 16 east or Main Street.

• Approve the purchase of bush hogging equipment from Sunsouth John Deere of Carthage: two mx7 dual wheel at the state contract price of $4,928 each; and, a FC15M Flex wing at $21,120;

• Approve the transfer of Calvin Williams from the Street Department to the Police Department. His pay will be $12.75 per hour;

• Accept the resignation of Tim Triplett from the Street Department;

• Approve the hiring of Tony McIntosh to work for the Street Department at $10 per hour;

• Approve the rezoning of a lot at 283 Carver Ave. from R1 to R3. The vote followed a public hearing on the matter. No one objected to the change; and,

• Approved an  AT&T road bore along Main Street from Church to Center.
