Bobcats get revenge against Yellowjackets with 54-36 win

Last year, Sebastopol rolled into the Union game unbeaten with Adarius McDougle among the state leaders in rushing yards.

But Union knocked out McDougle and the Yellowjackets took a 56-21 win in that game.

This year, the senior quarterback from Sebastopol got his revenge as he rushed for 267 yards and four TDs, threw for 94 yards and a TD to lead the Bobcats to a 54-36 win over the Yellowjackets on Friday night.

Union falls to 3-6 on the season and 2-1 in Division 4-2A play and will play at Philadelphia on Thursday night.

Union coach Jordan Wren said McDougle and the Bobcats got their revenge after getting beat by the Yellowjackets last year.

“I guess McDougle got his lick back on us,” Wren said. “We put a lick on him last year and beat them pretty good. He took his lick last year and gave it back to us this year. He’s a really talented player and hurt us on some cutback runs. We don’t have an effort issue, we have a tackling and turnover issue. The effort is great and I have no complaints there. It’s just when there is a big-time play to make, we aren’t making it."

Union got the ball to start the game and drove 63 yards in 11 plays and scored o a 3-yard run by Myilan Moore with 6:55 left in the first quarter. Aidan Davis hit the PAT and Union led 7-0 early in the game.

Sebastopol answered with a 14-play drive but came up short as they turned the ball over on downs.

Union then hit a big play as Moore hit Zi Buckley on an 86-yard reverse pass for a touchdown. Davis hit the PAT and Union led 14-0.

After swapping punts, Sebastopol finally got on the scoreboard. After a 37-yard gain on a fake punt, Jamarius Lay scored on a 3-yard run with 2:45 left in the half. Noah Atkinson’s PAT was good and Union led 14-7.

Union was driving in to score before the half when Moore fumbled into the end zone and Sebastopol’s Dannon Jenkins caught the ball in the air and returned it 105 yards for a touchdown. Atkinson hit the PAT to tie the game at 14-14 going to the half.

“That was a 14-point swing and the play of the game,” Wren said. “You give it to your best player, running behind your best blockers and they got a helmet on the football. That was a huge momentum shift. If we score, we go up 21-7 and it’s a different second half.”

Sebastopol got the ball to start the second half and went 67 yards in nine plays as Adarius McDougle hit Luke McGarrity on a 39-yard touchdown pass. Atkinson’s PAT gave the Bobcats a 21-14 lead.

Union answered with a seven-play, 63-yard drive as Quinn Harris scored on a 6-yard run. Harris ran in the two point conversion and Union led 22-21.

McDougle started to get going on the ground as he scored on a 5-yard run with 50.9 seconds left in the third. Atkinson’s PAT gave Sebastopol a 28-22 lead.

Union then scored in five plays as Harris scored on a 6-yard run with 10:53 left in the game. The try for two failed to tie the game at 28-28.

Sebastopol answered with a 22-yard run from McDougle to go up 35-28. After recovering a Moore fumble, McDougle then scored on a 50-yard run to go up 40-28.

Union pulled within four points as Harris scored on a 3-yard run and a two-point conversion with 5:27 left in the game to cut the lead to 40-36.

McDougle then ripped off a 49-yard run and Lay scored on a 1-yard run as the Bobcats led 48-36.

McDougle then intercepted a Moore pass and then scored on a 6-yard run as the Bobcats took a 54-36 lead for the final margin.

Union had 236 yards rushing and 216 yards passing for 452 yards of total offense. Moore was 9-of-17 passing for 216 yards with one TD and two interceptions. Moore also rushed for 97 yards and a TD on 13 carries. Harris rushed for 135 yards and two TDs on 23 carries. Buckley had four catches for 106 yards while Mason Tucker had four catches for 60 yards. Omarri Holliday had one catch for 41yards.

On defense, Buckley had 11 tackles while Jordan Smith had 10 tackles. Aidan Davis had eight tackles with three tackles for loss while Vaiden Bouder also had eight tackles. Holliday and Aidan Easterling each had seven tackles while William Breedlove had five tackles.

The Yellowjackets will travel to Philadelphia this week to take on the Tornadoes in the regular-season finale.

Philly is 3-6 on the season but 3-0 in Division 4-2A play. Union is 2-1 in division play and the winner will be 4-2A champions and host a first-round playoff game.

“The bottom line is if we beat Philly, we win the district and that is doable,” Wren said. “If we lose, we are the No. 4 seed. I think they are very good up front on the offensive line. Their defensive is full speed and comes right at you. We will have to play a clean game if we are going to have a chance.”
