Board continues hearing on unclean property

Aldermen continued a public hearing until their first meeting in February concerning uncleaned property at Hardy Tires on Beacon Street.

Mayor James A. Young said at the Jan. 5 meeting progress was being made and asked that the mattered be tabled.

Owner Bobby Hardy updated the board on his progress. He said they were cutting up the old tires and promised to the scrap metal in front of the building would be hauled off soon.

Mayor Young acknowledged the progress and told Hardy the hearing was being continued.

It was a brief meeting, lasting less than 30 minutes.

In other matters, alderrnen voted to:

• Approve the minutes of the previous meeting and the claims docket;

• Approve a motion to pay NAFECO $420 out of the Fire Prevention account;

• Accept a donation of $10,000 to the police department from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Interim police chief Lt. Eric Lyons said plans are to purchase radios and body cameras with the money;

• Approve for former police chief Julian Greer to purchase the pistol he used while in service to the city;

• Approve for Jessie Hamilton to attend a DRE training meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., on January 18-31. The city will cover expenses for the trip; and,

• Approve a motion to start the process of hiring an engineer for the Booker T. Washington gym project.

Mayor Young reported that cameras has been installed in City Hall, including the ones to replace the ones in the municipal clerk’s office. The mayor added that a leak in City Hall roof has been repaired.
