The Neshoba Central Big Blue Band came in sixth place out of 32 total marching bands in the MBDA/MHSAA State Marching Championship on Oct. 29.

Neshoba Central Director of Bands Daniel Wade said the championship was held at Germantown High School in Gluckstadt.

“We are very proud of the kids and we couldn’t have done it without the parents,” Wade said. “Our color guard came in third during the championship as well, so we’re also very proud of them and the energy everyone put forth during marching season.”

He said the Big Blue Band has a long tradition of being All Superior, and while the band is extremely proud of their performance in the state championship, they plan to aim even higher next year as they move into 6A for the 2023-2024 school year.

“It’s a year-round process,” Wade said. “We never stop preparing. We’re going into our concert and indoor season now which is also competitive, so we’re always trying to be better even when we’re not on the football field. Marching band is just one of the things we do.”

“The grand prize for us is the students who come through our program and become better human beings after being in our band,” he said. “We hope to send them off to college on a band scholarship, and most importantly, we want to teach them to be better people. Last year our seniors accumulated over a quarter million dollars in band scholarships. That’s the biggest prize.”
